I would say the U18 champs aren't so much about winning but showing off the best of the draft talent available against higher quality opposition than most get to play against. So while every kid out there is a competitive beast, recruiters want to see what they can do.

That's why you see players in different roles each game. Henry played as a lead up full forward against Metro, a half forward against SA, a forward pocket against the Allies and an attacking wingman against Country. Robertson would spend half a game leading the midfield, a quarter in a back pocket taking kick outs and a quarter up forward showing off his marking.

WA were lucky in that they didn't stretch their players too far from their natural game and that all their players are versatile, mid range types like Rivers and Ruscoe. Other sides weren't as versatile (although most would argue the Country side is a better and more versatile team than WA but were jumped by a fresh WA after Country had played a tough game just 5 days earlier) so when players were moved out of position, they didn't have as much cover and their stars weren't able to carry them.

To me Biz, that is a Morganish way of saying Summa & co picked a team to win the Champs, and played them where they needed to depending on the team they were up against.

Watching the game, Vic Country were made to look slow.. They might have been a bit flat because of the 5 day break but WA's leg speed definitely stood out!

If you saw any of Country's other games, they do have quite a fast side with plenty of speed and size so it was a bit surprising when WA jumped them in the first quarter. I think a lot of that went down to Henry and Sharp on the outside who were running rings around the Country players while Robertson and Garcia handled the inside grunt work dishing the ball out with ease.

Garcia going down and the Country players stepping up nullified it there after and Country looked the better side for the rest of the contest. What also helps those outside players run and carry in the championships is not being able to flood or throw players behind the ball. It really opens things up and allows players a little more time and space to show what they can do which is fantastic.

I don't think Sumich had too great an influence on any of those things. He was good as coach but I wouldn't be using U18 games to pad a CV for a head coaching gig. All of those coaches are limited in what they can do on field in terms of structure, positional play and match ups. There's generally no tagging and players play very loosely.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

How are they not allowed to flood, Biz?

As for the other reasons why Sumich had no or negligible influence on the game, I would have thought that the coach does have an influence on structure, whatever limitations the rules put on him, as well as things like whether or not to tag, how you will negate the oppositions best players if you can't tag, how you will play your stars to get the best out of them.

From what I can gather, Summa and co have done very well adapting to the way the U18 game is played, and I can see him doing the same at a higher level.

The U18 championships have anti-density rules that restrict the number of players you can have in an area of the ground at a time. As such, players are forced to maintain positions inside the 50m arcs and not all gather around the ball. There's also an unwritten rule that no one tags players in the championships so you'll pretty much never see anyone getting followed (which doesn't help show how the kids deal with some attention but regular colts games should do that).

Like with my previous examples of Henry and Robertson, coaches are also forced to throw players all over the ground to show what they can do in alternate positions and circumstances. You'll never see Robertson playing in a back pocket normally but he did spend time there in the championships so recruiters could see his accountability. It didn't help WA's structures at all and they struggled through the middle without him there but it was in Robertson's best interest to spend time there.

That's what the champs are about. Coaches are encouraged to show off the kids rather than winning.

Hopefully we get senior coaches coming through from the U18's who are used to the idea that you can leave players inside the fifty's, and can see the benefit of that.

Yeah RM...and lets hope the anti density rule gets a gig in the higher leavels.

Is that a new thin Biz, or have they had that for a while???

(Great explanations, by the way...)

Recall the hoooo haaaaa in the 2018 WAFL Colts Grand Final? Subiaco hit the lead with less than 2 minutes on the clock then flooded Swan Districts’ forward line. Swans were pissed off as they thought the anti-flooding rule applied in the WAFL finals. I’m not sure if Subi got away with one because the Footy Commission was gutless or if Swans were wrong about application of the rule.

Cletus, I'm not pushing for more rule changes, you know my thoughts on that topic: go back to a simpler rule book. What I would like to see is coaches doing something to look after the game, after all it is the game paying their way, not them paying to be a part of it. The people who are paying to be a part of it are the ones suffering these days.

Subi got away with it because...well, because they always do. I mean, why play to the rules if you don't feel like it and no one expects you to?

It's not a sledge though. It's an historical fact.

An assumed fact stemming from a questionable judicial decision that reckoned breathing normally after an asthmatic restriction of the airways was indeed performance enhancing which has historically morphed into a conversational control poo-pooing sledge to dismiss any east of East Freo perspective on injustice and the abuse of regulatory power that reinforces and reiterates the class based protection racket by the hob-knobs at the WAFC.

A bit of a mouthful - naturally, I dispensed with the particulars and just used the colloquial term sledge and somewhat optimistically applied a lasting analogy of around 4.5 billion years. Admitedly, this may not be long enough.
