You'd have to draft a bloke with a name like that, wouldn't you Shane?

Liam Henry was one of the best on the ground with 25 possessions.

If you get a chance to look at the replay, check out the kick from Hayden Young which set up a goal for Vic Country a couple of minutes from the end. It’s almost worth recruiting him based just on that kick!!

Yeah it was a good kick but it’s a kick most would make if they would like to play afl

It's funny how WA take out the U18 championship but most of the draft top pick speculation is still around the Vic Metro kids. Let's face it, Vic Metro barely won one game and I reckon Vic Country were lucky to get into the final game. The WA captain averaged 30 disposals a game across the tournament yet the journos focus is on some kid with just over 22/game. No wonder few people are willing to have a direct debit debt to get beyond a paywall.

Good on Sumo and our not-so-little tackers for bringing the beer back to WA. Up yous Cal Twomey.

I agree with you to an extent Polly, a lot of the West Aussies are a little underrated but that is always going to be the case.

However I think WA were a far more balanced and mature side than the others along with being better coached/structured during most of the champs.

Our key position players for example (especially down back) weren't really key position players but instead big bodied runners like Rivers, Ruscoe and Prior. They were able to use their strength to out muscle opponents and then run off rather than height. They probably have limited growth to play that position at the next level where as most other sides were giving the tall, skinny forwards/defenders a gig there to show what they could do instead of players possibly better suited.

WA also had a slightly older side with some over agers like Pina (missed being drafted last year but could go this year) and few under agers who won't be eligible for the draft this year (but boy did we see a good one in that final game through Grainger-Barass, that was an impressive performance which I'll mention in a write up later).

The other sides tended to have a few really strong performers and a lot of others with potential who didn't show it. Vic Metro for example had 4/5 kids who were fantastic and the rest of the side barely fired a shot. I don't think it'll damage too many of their prospects but the U18 Champs probably shined more of a light on the WA talent. They'll all push up to that 10-30 range so that's where I'd like us to focus our draft picks at the trade period.

Fair enough Biz. But if you're such a fantastic talent you should be able to lift your teammates above one bloody win - if you can't, what's the point of being drafted by Gold Coast. You'll be another Lukosius.

You should have watched the Sydney/GC game on the weekend Polly, Lukosius was awesome. Was moved into a bit of a half back role and dominated, settting up the play and delivering some beautiful balls forward. He had 7 marks and 18 touches but they were fantastic to watch. He side stepped opponents with pure class and looked a couple of levels above everyone else.

Unfortunately he's just too small and skinny to be of much use up forward yet, especially when GC have little support there and are getting belted.

But you're right, none of the others lifted their side like Robertson did. He should crack the top 10 but I do query his kicking which has been a bit average all championships. That'll hurt him at the next level.

So, Biz, what you are saying is, that WA picked a side to win the U/18s comp, not a side to get into the top 25 picks in the draft. And you also infer that Sumich is a bloody good tactician, who uses the talents of the squad he has available, and he has a smart bunch of selectors behind him.

Steve, what are you waiting for, keep Harley and sack Lyon.

I agree with you Biz, but you would also have to say we were to fast and nippy.. Also Luke Jackson dominated the ruck against that skinny kid.. He was awesome but I wander at 198cm if he could be a ruck in the AFL

Nope, but he would make a great big bodied mid-fielder.

I would say the U18 champs aren't so much about winning but showing off the best of the draft talent available against higher quality opposition than most get to play against. So while every kid out there is a competitive beast, recruiters want to see what they can do.

That's why you see players in different roles each game. Henry played as a lead up full forward against Metro, a half forward against SA, a forward pocket against the Allies and an attacking wingman against Country. Robertson would spend half a game leading the midfield, a quarter in a back pocket taking kick outs and a quarter up forward showing off his marking.

WA were lucky in that they didn't stretch their players too far from their natural game and that all their players are versatile, mid range types like Rivers and Ruscoe. Other sides weren't as versatile (although most would argue the Country side is a better and more versatile team than WA but were jumped by a fresh WA after Country had played a tough game just 5 days earlier) so when players were moved out of position, they didn't have as much cover and their stars weren't able to carry them.

On Jackson, I don't see him as a ruckman at the next level unless he adds a few cms. He is the prototype of a modern second ruck who can hold his own and then be a danger on the floor and around the ground. He'll be a good target forward and prove a very good player. I'd compare him to a JLo or a Josh Jenkins.

The commentators in the WA vs Country game kept comparing him to Grundy but he's 4cm shorter than Grundy and I'm not sure he'll fill out the same way with a more athletic build. I wouldn't want him to as a second ruck though, he could be a match winner and incredibly hard to match up on at the next level.
