Betting on outcomes in professional sports you have direct capacity to influence i.e. ...

- whether you kick a goal, how many goals you kick, ...
- how many goals a team member might kick i.e. whether to take your own shot or pass, who you pass to ...

... is as dodgy as all hell.

What was he thinking when he had the bets placed: I’ll “bet” it wasn’t.... “ ... well if I get a chance to achieve that outcome best I miss and waste my money”

In my view he is lucky. Other codes internationally would have banned him for life (US baseball as an example).

It doesn’t involve the same loss of life or magnitude of critical incidents but gambling industry in Aus is like the NRA and gun ownership in the US. We’re so complicit, so surrounded by it, so accepting of the ills because it is something we do, that when anyone actually suggests tearing part of it down people freak out. (Not to mention defend the revenue and sponsorships).

**like to acknowledge problem gambling / addiction can be very real and huge issue for individuals, families and their friends and peers. I was not trying to be dismissive of this when comparing issue to gun violence. Just think we have such a cultural / visceral reaction to defending ‘my right to have a punt’ there are some similarities.

I agree that it’s not a conflict, but the AFL almost has to come down harder on Stephenson because of how much the AFL itself has allowed gambling to a part of the sport, and that seems a little off.

I’m not sure how the AFL should best deal with gambling availability and revenue, but players not gambling is a non-negotiable regardless of the model the AFL adopts.

Shane,

I fully agree with your point in maintaining the integrity of the game but I can also see the point that hypen raised about the AFL's chronic addiction to gambling dollars. Whoever could have imagined a peak sports body having an official gambling partner? Or an official brewing partner for that matter.

The AFL is deeply in bed with organisations that are the antithesis of sporting principals.

Yes, Stevenson should cop his whack. He knew the rules and made a choice to break them. The obvious result from that choice is opening the door to corruption and I'm willing to bet that some Indian bookmakers could help explain that better than I can.

But, the AFL is also absolutely being hypocritical in this. They can bang on about the 'integrity of the game' while they promote gambling (heavily) and the consumption of alcohol and all kinds of things that are bad for sportsmen (Lucky I guess that tobacco advertising is illegal or we would likely have an official lungbuster of the AFL)

Where that continues as a failure the lack of integrity of the rest of the competition. We have very little transparency in the decision making process, highly inconsistent umpiring, highly inconsistent MRO outcomes, highly inconsistent tribunal outcomes and many examples of AFL / Commission members generating money from conflicts of interest.

You don't get to wave the integrity flag at the players when ignoring integrity in management. Thats not integrity, that is definitely hypocrisy.

I couldn't tell you how much the AFL promote gambling versus how much gambling is promoted through them. Ads on the television aren't the AFL.

It's certainly not as in your face as it used to be and nowhere near as overt as the McDonalds ads at the games.

The penalty for gambling was 4 weeks and $20,000. The penalty for being stupid is 18 weeks, with two thirds suspended.

Stupidity for gambling against the universally known and understood rules 6 weeks

Stupidity for not being able to win a bet, on yourself, to kick a goal, as a forward. 6 weeks

Stupidity for self reporting a few bets. 6 weeks

The forgiving nature of the AFL will certainly encourage any young players with a problem to step forward if they make a similar mistake.

I've watched plenty of soccer and EPL over the years and the AFL is no more in bed with the likes of betting agencies and beer companies than any other sport. Major sides display their logo's on their shirts and are run by people with large ties to these companies let alone all the advertising everywhere.

For example I have Liverpool jerseys with beer sponsors Carlsberg on it along with most clubs across the world. Pretty much every club in the EPL has a betting agency as a major sponsor and are happy to display their logo's and ads all over their kit and stadiums. Stoke City is run by the largest shareholder of Bet365.

Betting agencies are very well tied into sport all over the world and I'd think the AFL are one of the world leaders in trying to deal with them in a more appropriate manner. The AFL can only do so much however and Shane is correct in that at a point, you have to work with them to try and restrict the impact of gambling.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I think he is a fine, honest, upstanding young man who made a silly mistake, $10,000 fine - play on seems like it would have been a more appropriate punishment.

Also, does anyone know where I can place a bet on the fact that Stephenson out might be the straw that broke the camels back for Alvin Purple’s ladder leading (but extremely unlucky of late) DuFFLe team.?

Especially after said coach traded out one of his forwards two days ago because he had an abundance of forwards and thought a gamble on a midfielder who hasn’t played for a year was a good idea at the time.

AP, I haven't read the rule book, but are you risking a rather large fine and 15 week suspension, placing bets while being a coach of a Duffle League team?

It is obvious you don't know how the Duffle League works do you RM?
Whilst I confess, I myself haven't actually read the rule book, the Duffle is not unlike the AFL in that it has morals, integrity, standards it has to uphold.
So yes I may be risking a big fine but I do know the Bossman Merc has a penchant for a nice Glenmorangie single malt whisky so I am sure the right decision will come out in due course.

In all this discussion there is no mention of the perils or worries surrounding gambling. The AFL and probably plenty of other sports, is littered with players with gambling issues. This is a 19 yr old we're talking about. i find it very worrying that someone so young is already caught up in this.
A family thing? Influenced by older team mates? Whatever, it is surely there should be more education for young kids virtually straight out of school about the dangers of gambling.

Young players like him get all the education they need to know that players are not allowed to bet on the AFL. They are well schooled by the AFL on this and other issues.

Shane leave the Maccas criticisms alone. I'm getting my free Big Mac for each of our wins at Optus, I think that's a pretty good deal, don't ruin it for me.

I get it now AP, Stephenson's biggest mistake was not knowing what single malts Gil & co favoured.

According to the article I read, Larkin, a teammate convinced him to turn himself in after finding out about the bets. If the tribunal took this into account and reduced his sentence, he has copped a penalty far out of whack from anything else handed down, if not, why not?

I wonder how much worse an image for the game, and risk to its integrity, this is compared to what we saw Gaff do last year.
