TOPIC: Jaiydn Stephenson

The AFL's product is inextricably linked to on-line gambling, by design. You can't go on to the AFL app and learn the upcoming week's games without knowing the odds, consider Nathan Brown's info segments - its hard to know where the analysis ends and the gambling add begins; the game's integrity well diminished with experts giving tips and then the odds. Every second add on Fox Footy is a blokey add flogging gambling products, we all know this.

But the AFL is going to come down like a tonne of bricks on a kid who probably got roped into all that, who whilst being told not to do it - did do it. Maybe he succumbed to their media blitz? Whats the AFL's skin in the game in all this and is their a level of hypocrisy attached to it?

Those are all good points but if he placed a bet using inside information then he deserves to be punished. That's not an unreasonable expectation of integrity.

There's two separate aspects to this discussion. Firstly, is it hypocritical for the AFL to be promoting betting through it's website and many other forms of communication while disallowing their employees/players from gambling?

Secondly, is there any responsibility from said promotion of gambling for Stephenson making an epically dumb decision to place that bet (or have that bet placed on his behalf)?

No one is going to debate Stephenson should be severely sanctioned but where the AFL and it's policies sit in the whole scheme of things should be looked at.

I don't see that as hypocritical. Even when you send in a coupon from back of the Milo tin it excludes employees from entering.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Personally, I think promoting gambling then asking your own employees not to indulge is hypocritical. But to each their own.

What's Sportsbet paying for Stephenson to appeal the sentence?

If you work at a brewery and they tell you not to drink while operating a forklift, is that hypocrisy?

I think they promote gambling too much around sport, as they do grog and bloody McDonalds but that's a separate issue to someone betting on the outcome of the sport they play in.

It's naive to think people won't bet on sport and if the industry doesn't involve itself, and set parameters then it will be even worse. If they partner up they can have access to betting records and help police integrity issues with the game.

We've seen how bad it goes wrong with the cricket. You don't want the outcome changing because someone wants to win the last leg of their multi.

This isn't about gambling and all it's problems, it's about the integrity of the contest.

Lucky they caught the kid before he lost his house on our game before the bye. I'll miss him, he's great to watch on the field.

Some of his bets

-Collingwood to win
-Himself to kick a goal
-Himself to kick multiple goals
-Collingwood teammates to kick a goal
-Collingwood teammates to kick multiple goals

the League's integrity department said "there was no evidence to suggest there was any intent to influence the outcomes within the contest".

Ouch.

At a brewery they wouldn't be shoving frothing steins in the driver's face.

Enticement to betting is omnipresent at AFL matches, and these are young impressionable guys many of whose mates would be right into it. It's a perpetual parent grumble, that my 23yo son hangs off his mates' words rather than mine.
A betting scandal waiting to happen.

Its made abundantly clear to players they cannot bet on AFL games. This guy did, he pays the price, I think they are making an example of him to discourage others.

Where's the $20,000 fine component of the penalty go? Into the AFL HQ's punters club kitty?
