I'm sure there were plenty of others who were also at the game early Saturday to enjoy the young talent on display so I'm keen to hear everyone else's thoughts on the players. I've had a look at the replay as well now (linked later) and I've updated my thoughts on those I mentioned after the last game plus a few more.

Liam Henry (5): This game was worse stats wise for Henry (no goals, 8 marks and 19 touches) but I thought it was a far better performance and confirmed him as a first round pick. Every touch was pure class and straight onto the chest of a leading teammate, regardless of how much pressure Liam was under. His movement and ability to influence the play was a thing of beauty and I'm sold on him.

Deven Robertson (10): Stats wise (32 touches, 13 contested, 8 tackles) he was BOG and he was easily the most influential player in the WA side. He did what he normally does by winning the contested ball and dishing out to teammates. Always putting his body on the line and even taking a few strong marks, it was another impressive performance that will push his top 10 chances. He does need to show more outside run but I'm not worried about his disposal by foot despite mostly handballing. His kicks were short but hit targets consistently.

Luke Jackson (32): Again a good game although his opponent wasn't a towering ruckman so his high hitout numbers (35) probably aren't as impressive. Still competed really well on the ground and burst through a few packs. Did his chances of a first Rd pick no harm with a strong rising pack mark in the last quarter.

Jeremy Sharp (17): People will probably rave about his goal and movement in the open which were impressive but I was again worried by his lack of interest in anything physical. Multiple times I saw him shirk picking the ball up and instead tapping it on or trying to kick off the ground under slight pressure which gave the ball to SA. Then there were a couple of times he backed into space as a third man up before pulling out of the contest at the last moment. I don't know the thinking behind it but someone of his size could be so much more if he was willing to put his body on the line in these games.

Trent Rivers (35): He marshalled the backline superbly and constantly took saving marks while providing good rebound (22 touches). I like this kid and despite being undersized (188cm), he would be a great third tall/half back flanker. Great vision and disposal when rebounding really impressed me and when in traffic he moved quite well. A good draft smokey.

Jaxon Prior (20): The son of Freo assistant coach Michael Prior, his first half in defence was fantastic and along with Rivers, was the catalyst for WA's dominance down back. Also undersized (188cm) I don't see him in draft contention but I liked his game before spending most of the second half on the pine or out of the play.

Riley Garcia (4): There were a number of people who rated Garcia's first game highly and while I thought he played well, I didn't think he impacted the play as much as a number of others. This week he had impact. He worked hard with Robertson to win the ball for WA at the bottom of packs and managed to get it on the outside too, showing off some decent footskills. If he converted his last opportunity on the run after some good play, WA probably win the game but it shouldn't take too much away from a very good game. He's in draft contention after racking up another heap of the footy (28 touches, 15 contested, 8 clearances and a goal) but probably a late second/third round pick given his size.

Trey Ruscoe (26): He was part of a dominant backline in the first half that saw him rebounding strongly and confidently while also locking down well. It was his second half that had me excited as he moved through half forward with short stints in the middle. He used his body well and was a tackling machine that really hurt the opposition. Almost turned the game WA's way in the last quarter with some powerful play through congestion and I hope he continues to get more opportunities there in the rest of the tournament. A 190cm ball of muscle and aggression charging at the footy will be a sight to behold. All of that without mentioning his fantastic kicking that really set the play up for WA and always seemed to hit a target.

Cameron Anderson (6): WA have a plethora of exciting small forwards and almost all of them had their colours lowered by a SA defensive unit that absolutely dominated the air like few games you'll see. Anderson was the pick of the bunch for mine despite both Thorne kicking a goal and Bennell skirting in and out of play.

There were also a few for SA who stood out and you should keep an eye on for draft day.

Dyson Hilder (33): Easily BOG for mine and stopped every WA foray forward despite the ball entering F50 plenty (WA won the inside 50 count 46-35 but could only manage 4 goals). A 196cm lunk of a lad with an amazing ability to read the play and position himself beautifully. He took pack marks, one on one marks, third man up marks and was just everywhere in the air. His disposal always hit a target and he wasn't afraid to run off and provide an option. I really enjoyed his game.

Karl Finlay (35): If Hilder didn't mark it, Finlay did. A fantastic combination in the key defensive posts and WA had few answers with their mosquito fleet struggling for opportunities.

Harry Schoenberg (15): The main driver through the SA midfield, he did some great things in heavy traffic with one touch contested pick ups and quick hands to the outside hitting teammates chests on the run. It was pure class and he was a strong reason SA were able to surge ahead in the second half.

Dylan Stephens (7): Did well through the midfield and found a bit of the footy. Did a lot of SA's grunt work but used the ball nicely when in the open too. He'll be around that top 10 on draft day.

Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Thanks Biz.
This Schoenberg bloke from SA writes a mean classical tune eh - albeit with some pretty wacky time changes. I never knew he played footy too, there you go.

So Biz, in the event there is a bid for Henry we match with our next available. Is that correct?

If an opposition club were to bid on Henry at say pick 8, we would have to come up with the points to match that bid and in effect move up to pick 8 while our other picks would move lower.

According to this table here, pick 8 would be worth 1,551pts so we would need to use our picks to match the points total. As an academy kid, we'd get a discount on that total (I think it's like 20%) so we'd only need about 1,241pts.

Using our current draft picks (pick 13 then 31 before any priority/academy father sons ruin things) we'd have 1,202pts and 606pts so we'd effectively lose our pick 13 and 39pts off pick 31 (dropping it to pick 33).

If the bid were to come after our first pick, we'd need to make sure we have enough points banked elsewhere in picks to match the bid.

Cheers for that summary Biz.. Good to hear Liam Henry went well again.. I think you can even go into a deficit for the next year with those points can you not? I mean if you can't come up with enough points we still get to grab him and return the points the next year?

I mean if we use our first pick on Tim Kelly and an early bid comes early for Liam Henry we could go into a deficit for next year. Probably loose our third rounder or something?

Thanks Biz. So in essence the only incentive is the 20% points discount? Does that serve the original purpose of the initiative; to make it a little easier for those who are coming from a long way back to get drafted?

We should be able to rookie them earlier - pre draft. And help them earlier.

I think the initiative is to help those from remote areas make the transition easier into the AFL. He has been getting schooled by Tendai and been around the club to see what it takes. I think its a good program. The discount is a bit more than 20% because a collection of late picks is never as valuable as an early pick. Plus I reckon it gives us a chance to get to know the people we draft really well and weed out the people that we think are lazy or not resilient enough to cope with life as AFL player.

You can go into a deficit for the following year but there is a limit ( I think it's effectively the premier's first 4 picks such as 18, 36, 54 and 72 which is about 1,700pts). But yeah, that would screw our picks in the following year (I'm pretty sure it's deducted from your first pick and then your next pick and so on) so I don't think any clubs have been keen to do that so far.

Yes and no. The 20% discount gets frozen at the end of the first round at 197pts so it increases in value the lower down the draft they slip. You also effectively gain access to a player you wouldn't otherwise based on the balanced system the draft promotes, all of a sudden trading your pick much higher.

At the moment I would see a pick for Henry coming in the 15-20 range which is about where our first pick is likely to be. I think the ideal scenario is we effectively get two first round picks by no bids coming for Henry before our first. If that happens, I would be absolutely stoked because the talent is looking reasonably even through the first round or so this year. Not as good a top end as last year but a good spread after that.

I like him but you have to do a lot to stand out from a forward pocket. I'd say there's a few ahead of him at the Championships like Henry and Pickett but he's shown a bit. He'd be more in line for a late pick/rookie selection at the moment.

He had a quieter game on Sat as the SA talls dominated and there were few crumbs to be had. He still managed a goal but it's his first game that pushed him into the minds of a lot of recruiters. He's got fantastic touch and hits the ball at speed which is great to see from someone of his size. He also seems to love a tackle and applying pressure which is something everyone wants to see for the next level.

The way he moves around the footy has me thinking Jim Krakouer/ Jeff Farmer, pretty determined not to let the opponent get an easy kick, and looks to have a good footy brain to me, could be a bargain pick?

He is a good hunter of the ball and man who always looks dangerous when he's involved in the play. I'd like to see him step up in the champs and really dominate the forwardline before getting too excited about him. He's shown promise but not enough to leapfrog some other contenders just yet.

Yeah, but he looks to me like a Darcy type, whatever level he goes to, he will give you all he has got. Worth taking a chance on ahead of your average big-bodied Victorian mid-fielder or athletic ruckman, I reckon.

It depends on your squad requirements. If we're getting Henry then I'm pretty happy with our half forwards for the next few years (remembering we have Sonny, Swit, Matera, Bennell and Sturt already). We're probably better off looking at other areas to improve the side on draft day unless players in those positions drop away in talent.

There's a lot of options from WA in that mid range that I think will be good value later in the draft and we could capitalise there. I'm hoping Rivers and Ruscoe stop doing so much and drift out towards the 40's/50's so we have a chance at one or both.
