TOPIC: Betts and Stack

Sounds like a shoe store or something.

The chatter around the post Betts goal interaction with Stack is something I find curious. Betts got Stack to fly for the ball; he led him there and then he stayed down. It was brilliant and clever. Stack was magnanimous enough to acknowledge he'd got his pants pulled down. Late in the game and Adelaide well and truly home.

Its offended some, Garry Lyon is being Garry Lyon. Someone said to me as a paid member they'd feel cheated if his team's players were behaving that way towards opposition.

Its a changing football world but what's fascinating is the response to these changes. I feel there is a generation gap between the people playing the game and those commentating on the game. Lyon was coached by Ron Barassi, you couldn't do that under him and they were the values Lyon was applying in his rant last night.

It should be an occupational obligation for these types to get with the times.

*Correction - Barassi quit Melbourne in 1985 and Lyon debuted in 1986. Think it might have been coach Northey in 86, same type different haircut.

Just saw it. That was brilliant. How could you not react like that, just to Eddie Betts' smile.

I'm not sure why Garry Lyon a thing. He must be tight at hitting his cues or something.

A lot of older people saying they don't like it, I played in an amateur game once and it was frowned on when a pre-game handshake took place.

My mum would have given me a clip over the ear if I didn't clap that goal.

And her Dad too from what I hear. And he wasn't shy about telling the opposition what he thought of them.

I don't think good and bad sportsmanship has a generation.

I was always taught to shake the opponents hand before and after a game, and to thank the umpires. It's called sportsmanship, and I'd like to see more of it. Maybe a beer after the game with the opposition, umpires, and fans, like the old days, to celebrate or commiserate, may add to the player's experience and turn them from part of a team, to part of a club. It may also help with some of the mental health issues that seem to be plaguing the AFL at the moment - a sense of belonging.

God bless your mum.

I have always clapped great marks and great goals - regardless of who kicked them. From the stands.

It's pretty rare for opponents to clap on the paddock but there is also a brother element to this. Apparently Stack had been saying to Betts all night - "No special goals tonight, brother". Betts lures Stack into the aerial contest, stays down, kicks the freakiest of freak goals and grinningly says to a grinning Stack "Told ya, brother".

Some things transcend teams.

I thought it was great.

There was a similar moment in a Derby ages ago when Hayden and Wirrapunda were both chasing the ball in the goalsquare, and in their jostling they both fell over and the ball trickled over the line. They both basically laughed at each other, helped each other up and ran their seperate ways.

Similarly, I thought it was great when McGovern just luaghed at being Son Son's step-ladder in last year's Derby.

I know people want players to put everything on the line, but surely fans also want to see players having fun out there every now and then. Hopefully Stack has a great career filled with his own highlights, but being on the receiving end of a classic Bett's goal is not only something he'll learn from, but also something he'll probably tell his kids about.

Sydney Stack probably grew up idolising Eddie Betts for his achievements on the field.

Lets face it, you don't have to be indigenous to appreciate what a class act Betts has proven to be over the years.

Further to that, they both share a common indigenous heritage. I think they are both Noongars but I could be wrong there. Clearly, there was two respect between those two last night and plenty of good natured byplay, which Lyon seems to have missed.

Football is still supposed to be a sport, where fair play and sportsmanship are supposed to count for something. That was a pure football moment and was great to see.

Sometimes players do something so good I don't see the harm in acknowledging it, remember the look of surprise and joy on McGovern's face when Walters took the hanger on him, I liked what Stack did, you can't accuse him of not trying, he had an awesome game.

Anybody who criticises a sportsman or woman for congratulating an opponent is simply a turd.

The only people complaining about this are the crusty old media men.
I have not heard one single fan who has a problem with it

There was also the opposite situation at Carton a while back, when Betts was consoling Aaron Davey from Melbourne during the game. Carlton players had been targeting him a bit during the game, and I think Betts was telling him to keep his head up.

Mitch Robinson came over and pushed Betts (his teammate) away; the implication being Davey was the enemy. I reckon some people would have loved Robinson’s hard-headedness, and that as the view from the Carlton leadership at the time, but in my eyes I loved what betts did and the others stamped themselves as people whose world view are not the same as mine (which is probably as polite as I can put it).

Nothing wrong with good sportmanship love the way Betts and Stack related.

You can play hard but still respect and appreciate the skills of your opponent..

As for the media and Gary Lyon in the words of Sam Kerr "Suck on this"
