The Insiders panel will wear purple on Sunday for Barrie’s last show, in honour of the Patron Saint of Freo supporters Matt Price.

Here's hoping that I see a GF win before I join Matt. It would be nice to be able to let him know how it felt down here.

Yes, it's a rarely noted gesture towards the loss of a true friend and footy lover by Bazza and the panelists - over a decade after Matt's passing.

Football thrives on those friendships, the sharing of a game, the following of a team, the repartee between mates when discussing footy. That's what we do here and most of us have been doing it for some time. When one of those mates goes the loss is never really forgotten.

There hasn't been a Freo game that I've gone to where I haven't wondered what Wizfan would've thought if he was still with us - his dagger sharp wit and passion for the unusual have never really been equalled in discussing Fremantle's games. A few years ago I was outside one of the gates at Subi and they had the old rock/anchor sitting there - I had my #33 jumper on and I just had to go lift the anchor for Wizfan. It was stupid, Wizfan would've laughed his arse off at it because it was so stupid. Every Freo game I watch Wizfan is watching it too - I know I'm not the only one that misses the bloke.

Last weekend I watched the game at the G with another long time mate. It's been over seven years since we watched a footy match together - despite half the country between us it was like no time had passed. Old footy mates are like that - there will come a time when we won't be able to share a game and a few beers.

I've never met a Freo supporter that doesn't revere Matt Price - good onya Barrie, it's what footy mates treasure more than anything else.

My apologies for the maudlin post.

With a head like that, can you even begin to imagine Barrie's ballbag?

46. It gets younger and sadder every year.

I still have the face of his distraught crying son burned in my mind.

Yeah, I remember as a much younger man feeling disdainful of people I knew crying during Lady Diana’s funeral. ‘You don’t know her’ I thought.

Then when I saw Matt Price’s coffin with a typewriter, guitar and a Freo scarf on it, I must admit I got a bit teary.

He wrote like he was your mate who was letting you in on a joke. It’s a rare gift. That people who worked with him still honour him a decade later shows what a good bloke he was.

And Barrie thinking of his mate on what is ostensibly a day all about Barrie says a bit about him too I reckon. He goes alright for a Pies supporter.

He's a wonderful man and to see him denounce the attacks on free speech this week makes you wonder how we'll get by without him. At least we will have Greg Sheridan I guess.

And watching Neale Daniher during the week, it makes me feel guilty I am not a better man.

I do struggle with the randomness of it all. And the quality of those afflicted.

Interesting comment about Pie supporters. I was surrounded by them at the G, I was pretty apprehensive at first, but they are a lot like us passionate about their team and grassroots supporters, they generally barracked supporting their team and giving it to the umps they rarely said anything about our players and the only booing was of umps.

I found I got on with them well.

They are totally different to the Scum supporters who boo everything, they even commented they preferred us at games to that other lot.

Barries gesture is wonderful and shows the quality of both him and Matt.

Quasi you need to get your self off to a Doc's quick smart. You've obviously contracted something from your surroundings at the G.

I was living in Sydney in 1999/2000, and back then you still read the paper for sports news. The sports sections had one page devoted to AFL (behind 10 for rugby) of which half was the Swans by default and you would be lucky for a two line mention of Freo. Matt's columns in the OZ were a godsend, and let me know I wasn't alone as Freo supporter in the east. I never met him but shed more than one tear when he died, still miss his articles today and am still sad for his family.

Such a humbling gesture from Barrie, what a bloke.

B1 R1, the Pies supporters generally are not a bad lot, the media and social media like to focus on the few idiots, like they do with us. Never see anything about eagles, Carlton, Melbourne supporters though, and they are far worse in there own way. I think Pies supporters appreciate what we go through with the media treatment we get, and cut us a bit of slack compared to others.

Geez, MM, you think about some pretty strange things while you peruse Dockerland. I probably won't be able to sleep tonight after reading that comment.

When I was living in Canberra I saw Matt Price in Kingston. I really wanted to say something bout Freo but I was a bit awe struck and felt rude to interrupt whatever he was doing.
