TOPIC: A Peel question

Walter the baker A Peel question 4 years 10 months ago #1

Walter the baker
As I am no longer in WA it's a tad difficult to get a handle on what's happening in the WAFL and the impact of the aligned AFL teams. One thing I cant get my head around is that Peel can be whipped by a non aligned WAFL team even though it has 16 AFL listed players on the ground. Is this a sign that our depth is actually very shalloe or are there other factors, e.g. a lot of young recruits, players developing out of position, playing as individuals in the hope of getting someone's attention, is the WAFL comp stronger than we think .... ? I'd be interested to hear about what people who are better placed than me say about Peel's performances this year and the talent outside our best 22.

I don't watch them much but when I've seen them I think it's mostly that team balance is a bit off when you're playing left over AFL players, and winning is not their main objective.

They're more likely to let a player get beaten a bit, to learn from it, than make a switch to make sure they win the game. They also put Freo players out there with a limit on how many minutes they'll let them play.

Agree with Shane, but I also feel there are a lot of players at Peel that struggle at WAFL standard. Quite often some of the better performers are the non-aligned Peel players.
This draft idea of picking young kids and then we see these highlight reels that make them look like the next big thing is misleading.
Someone else pointed out that our recruiting bloke is Victorian biased. Not sure whether that's true or not, but do think that too many WAFL players get overlooked at the expense of eastern states players.
Never seen any stats or am unsure how it could be judged, but if there were I'd be interested to know what our drafting success rate is like compared to other clubs.

The other thing Walter is they won't let them continue playing with a sore finger if it means further risk to an AFL asset.

Looking at our list you could perhaps group them like this?

AFL standard- Bennell, Ballas, Logue, Banfield, McCarthy, Darcy

Occasional game- Crowden, Colyer, Schultz, Giro

Unlikely- Dixon, Jones, Meek, North

Injured most or all season- Sandi, Kersten, Valente, Sturt

And almost by definition the players that are 'AFL standard' are likely to be in the Peel team because they are coming back from injury or out of form.

I think the alignment is a real detriment to Freo's ruckmen. There's no point having four ruckmen being played out of position in one team. I think they'd be better off letting guys like Meek and Jones play for their original WAFL clubs or sending them elsewhere at the start of each season.

Also, there's no point having four ruckmen.

We don't have any ruckmen. Meek and Jones are way short of AFL standard. Sandi is injured. Darcy slows the team down when he's played together with the other talls. Lobb is a marking forward. We need to recruit some ruckmen.

I read today that ruckmen in AFL were like quarterbacks in the NFL in they were traded between clubs, each trying to find the right fit for a rare commodity.

Did they give examples?

A better analogy is that ruckman are like goalkeepers, in that you want a good one, and you need a second one who is comfortable with ideally never playing, ever. You also want a young one, but you need to get the timing right between the capability growth of the young one and the decline of the good one. Again, while the second one watches on, from the bench.

You also don’t need to be careful of misreading the capability ceiling of the young one, which we did with Zac Clarke, who was and is carp.

An even better analogy, which I stole for the purpose of this post, is shane’s ruckman theory from a few years back.

Shane Richmond actually delivered a white paper on the sufficiently good enough backup crap ruckman, Mike.

Got a PhD from it. I can't be arsed finding it.

Darcy was never 'slow' until Lobb fronted up to the job - it's like Mundy was never slow until Bradley was in the side.

I still say Hodor should be in the 22.

I couldn't find the original white paper but this was a secondary source, from 2012 or so.

"Here's the problem with Zac Clarke.

According to my water tight, peer reviewed three ruckman system there is no point in playing Clarke.

Here's how it goes. Clarke is the young up and coming ruckman. Which makes him no good. He doesn't become any good until a tragic injury befalls the good ruckman and the crap ruckman at which point he magically becomes a first stringer.

As proven by this game, he was rubbish until Griffin went off. All of a sudden he became a competent footballer.

It's bad enough that they jinxed Sandilands by recruiting Griffin. Then to jinx Griffin as well, sometimes I wonder if they've even heard of the rule of three ruckmen.

So trying to play him and break the rule of three ruckman is pointless. Leave him be until his time comes. Next week Kepler Bradley has to play alongside Sandilands. It's the only way."

It fell apart with Sandilands because he refuses to die. But Bond never understood. I doubt Bell could either. We need someone over 5 foot tall.
