I can't listen to Damian Barrett for that long in one dose but the Thompson stuff is interesting. Particularly when you consider Cook's previous club.

Rather than send them off to Harvard, perhaps the AFL need to provide training to football administrators, in particular with how to identify and deal with people suspected of having substance abuse issues, not because it's about a morality judgement on personal choices, it's because opens the door for serious integrity issues in the league. He obviously had no idea what to do then and still doesn't.

I always thought Geelong did well not to be looked at during the Essendon business, when Thompson was clearly the link between the 'supplement' suppliers and Essendon. Maybe the AFL need to have a quiet look into his time at Geelong and the breaking of their forty odd year premiership drought.

The AFL have already considered this point in some detail.

Then decided not to look any more.

Pretty similar to how they decided that even though the 'supplement' used was called TB4, had a molecular weight that could not be anything else, that didn't prove that it was actually was TB4

Bastion of integrity is the AFL

I hold the gravest of fears for Bomber.

What still astounds me is all those press conferences he gave where they thought he was just relaxed and enjoying coaching. In front of a room full of people who's job it is to analyse things and report on them, none of them thought it off. It seemed very obvious to me that he was taking a little too much of his prescription medication during that period. The entire industry just looked the other way.

I’m sure they thought of it, but whether or not they had any hard evidence, struggled with the fine line between personal and public issues, or just were just turning the other way isn’t clear.

You don't always need hard proof, Morgan. It's not about having him arrested, it's about trying to help him.

They joked about his behaviour as if it was all normal. They encouraged it.

That's the exact line the Eagles used with Cousins. They had no proof he was taking drugs so they were powerless to do anything, as everything in life is a court of law.

There's a difference between the media and the club.

I'd prefer that journalists didn’t perpetrate rumours about the drug use of players or coaches based on something as subjective as demeanour in a press conference. Bomber always struck me as a weird unit, and while it seemed like his behaviour became increasingly erratic I couldn’t say for sure this was because of drug use. If you were in the media, how might you have approached it? What exactly would you have put in print?

How did you feel when the media in this state reported on Bennell’s ‘erratic behaviour’ at the Peel match? This is a guy who had been filmed with cocaine, and who has been suspended for missing training after being in nightclub fights. Did you get the impression the media was trying to help him? I’m pretty sure most on here thought the reporting was pretty irresponsible at the time.

I'm not talking about "the media" or writing articles and exposing him. I'm talking about people who work with him every week, in the same industry, helping him to get better.
