Love D Swan's tweet re Daisy having a drink

He said he'd be having a drink at quarter time if he played for Carlton and he'd be asking for a year's suspension not a week.

Can anyone clearly articulate why Thomas is not playing this week? Importantly, can Carlton?

It just seems clubs are so keen to take a stand and showcase their "standards" they over react.

Judd calls it stupid but then says its okay to have a wine with dinner. Which is what he did. But he seems to have made a mistake of doing it in public. He wasn't drunk, doesn't sound like he got tanked. Sounds like he had three wines in public over dinner at a charity event.

Is the infraction he had a drink in public, drank too much, drank at all or drank too close to a game or training session?

Or is it just that the world has gone mad?

Judd has got a bad case of the "pots", or a short memory. Let the player do what he wants to do. Punish him if he does not perform or brings the game or club into disrepute by all means, but turning the game into a dictatorship does not work.

Theres the many stories of Paul van der Haar, champion Essendon Premiership CHB playing hung over on a number of occasions.

The best story is where he visited a team mate who was in hospital after a in season operation and tuned up with 2 six packs to share.

The AFL and most of its clubs have become champions of virtue signalling, if the player has a beer or 3 so be it, as said above let it be unless it affects their game.

Thomas, of course, has been dominating this year. Not affected at all.

"Thomas has accepted the sanction and acknowledged he had contradicted the elite standards of the football club and what is expected of himself and his teammates."

Elite standards. Good grief. The Justin Langer types are everywhere.

Any danger the club could back him for attending a charity fundraiser? Worse still, the club made him say this:

“I want to make it clear that this is not a reflection of my character and in hindsight I understand the impact the choice I made can have on our group."

Even madder was Judd suggesting that a glass of wine was ok but not beer. As if it could be about anything other than the alcohol content.

I think the AFL clubs are missing a trick here. They're looking at this only from the point of view of physical fitness. Like many people, I would think some players would benefit mentally from a going out for a night and having a few drinks over a meal with their friends and it being considered a perfectly normal part of life. Some wouldn't.

The idea of team rules like this is to get the best performance out of the players. Ask yourself this. Which is going to have a greater effect on Thomas's ability to play football?

1. The physical health effects of going out midweek and having a few glasses of wine with his meal at a social event.
2. The mental health effects of being publicly shamed and suspended for going out midweek and having a few glasses of wine with his meal at a social event.

You make the point like Morgan would, Shane, but I still get your drift.

Damien gets it right now & again

If
there is legislated and full-protection from all facets of the football industry for any player who takes illegal drugs – and let's be factual and adult about this, it happens a lot ...
then
it's getting increasingly difficult to get my head around the sanctioning by clubs of players who happen to have a social drink. Last time I checked, having a drink in moderation was legal. Let's all just pretend the drugs don't happen, and that Dale Thomas and Steven May are the only "bad" guys in the competition.

And

If
you've read this column over the past eight or so years ...
then
you'll know Walters has always been the favourite. And don't ever underestimate what he did last week after the siren, roosting that ball 49 metres to win the game and keep alive a top-four hope. Superstar. All Australian this year, surely, and belatedly.

But twice in one week is astounding
