There is no such thing as anarchy in football. Its more about banging a game plan and options into players to the point where what they do looks instinctive. Barlow the other day said the role of winger is very technical. In other words play it badly and you collapse your options. Footy mostly is not about the individual - its a team sport with everyone working together. As for netball a goal either way is proof of nothing.

Larkin, do some investigation into the netball, and the Silver Ferns coaching debacle.

Also, footy is anarchy anyway, if played properly, because of the lack of an off-side rule and the size of the playing field. The narrative you are quoting is straight from the Parkin, Roos, Lyon playbook. They are micro managers, and their tactics work fine til someone picks them apart, then it falls to pieces because players are not allowed/ too scared/ unable to deviate from the game plan and throw something different at the opposition.

The role of any player is very technical, if you have a very technical game plan. The best players do not get technical, they get adaptive. If banging the footy down the line is not working, they try something else. Darcy would like to do that, Wilson would love to do that, but they are forced into following the game plan. GWS did not hold Wilson to technical plays, they told him " get the footy and put us in a position to score goals." He did, and GWS and Wilson were both successful. He comes to Freo and is told to go down the line for a stoppage at all costs. With 5 or 6 opposition players licking their lips, drifting to the boundary line between their wing and half-back.

Absolutely fact Larkin, than team sports are about how well 'the team sticks to the game plan / team rules".

Absolutely agree, and , absolutely subscribed to that very fact during my mediocre/meaningless sporting carreer.

But what if the "game plan' is ' crap'??... And that's the problem we have.!

Name 3 redeemable features of the Fremantle gamplan. I challenge you to.

I can think of only 1 : "Pressure the ball carrier" , and, I'm struggling to determine this applies to our opposition, or, us!!

The more I've watched the RoLy years, the more I reckon its us...

So you have seen no change in method over the past few years. No development of new players. I'll give you a test ... how long did we play a spare man back in our last home game?

Larkin, that went out with the rule change this year, but our forwards still are forced by the coach to play up on the half back line when the footy is there. Oppositions only need 2 defenders when playing Freo, the rest need to be forwards who can take a shot on goal, because they spend most of their time inside their forward 50.

The reason opponents take the footy away from clearances so easily is because they set up with options 1, 2 and 3 kicks down the ground, and space to use those options. Freo have options 1 kick down the ground from the defensive 50. All within 15 meters of the boundary, then players sprinting into the forward line if a stoppage is not forced at the contest. They have to wait to go forward because Lyon's mantra demands superior numbers at the stoppage, rather than superior skill at the stoppage.

The more I think about it the more I am convinced he does not rate skills training, because superior skills would mean less stoppages, and less chance for him to showcase his only coaching skill, how to win a stoppage.

RM fwiw Netball Aussie women win by a goal July 2018, NZ win by a goal July 2019 ( Taurua was appointed in August 2018)
back to the footy. I dunno what all the fuss is about. The Dockers are tracking about where I thought they would be at the start of the year. One bad game and just out of the 8 despite all the injuries.
Yeah the 666 rule has made a difference at bouncedowns but for the other 100 minutes its kinda irrelevant. And we do play a spare man back but not as often as last year. We run and carry better than we have for years and there is plenty of improvement yet. Be patient. Players and commentators in the east rate Roly for a reason.
Anyway its good to see the Fridge on the field again - he's pretty good for a young bloke.

Larkin, I asked you to have a look at what has happened over the last 3 years with NZ netball, not just to peruse the results. A quick perusal of the results of Freo's games gives some people the impression that there is nothing amiss at Freo.

If you're satisfied with our results and style of football, you must be happy with being a perennial loser and okay with watching anything, particularly if it's associated with Ross Lyon.

WAFL games have been a better standard than what we dish up. And that stat about us having the worst win/loss ratio besides
Carlton, GC and Brisbane says it all. Brisbane are now second and we're still bad but that's okay apparently.

Be patient my arse.

Kicking it down the line is as boring as bats boo. But until we can or are good enough at spotting and delivering to a player in space they will keep doing it as a percentage play.

So you finally acknowledge that we are below AFL standard with our field kicking (and 2g 19p says goal kicking as well) yet you fully support the club admin that keeps a head coach who refuses to train for skills.

Thats more than a little contradictory isn't it?

Added to which, over the past three and half seasons, we've lost (often badly) two games for every game we win. The games we win usually involve moving the ball quickly down the corridor like we did against North Melbourne, like we did in the final minutes of the Sydney game that gave us the win and like we did (at times) when we played Collingwood.

You can't really make a case that playing down the line is a percentage play when the percentages are so strongly against.

Besides, the reason we go down the line is due to Roly's limited game plan. He can only coach regimented, congested football and boundary throw ins, assures him of lots of congestion

I like it when we decide not to kick it down the line and instead switch the play, then wait for our blokes to get across so we can kick it down the other line.

The best(or worst depending on your outlook) part of that Shane, is watching the defending team beat our guys across and then have a rest while we catch up. Then we wonder why we look slow when we turn it over and they're ready for the next sprint.

It's like we're running a marathon and they're running a series of sprints with breaks in between.
