While Morgan points towards the drafting of defenders as being well done, I'd also point out that drafting defenders with early picks is not a common occurrence as these players tend to impact games less and have less ability than players in other positions who tend to be more creative. As a result, you could probably look at any club's backline and see a bunch of late picks/rookies taking those positions.
It's also a reason I was very much against trading our top draft pick to a lesser pick for McCarthy only to pick up a West Aussie defender (Logue) with that lesser pick. While he may still come good and do good things for the club, players in his position aren't rare or relatively tough to find later in the draft. That early pick should have been kept to use on a star mid/forward.
