TOPIC: The Case for the Defence

Morgan The Case for the Defence 4 years 11 months ago #1

A pre-season article on AFL.com.au ranked Freo’s defence 12th in the league. On 2018’s performance it was hard to argue against that - we were scored against heavily at times, and occasionally we looked a little disorganised – but it was clear to most Freo fans that the building blocks were there.

I think you could make a compelling case that Freo’s defence is among the best in the league this year. We are second the second stingiest defence in the league, and while some of that can be attributed to the way some of our games have devolved into scraps, I think that’s a league-wide trend, and we’ve held up well defensively even when the ball has gone into our defence a lot.

I also think our backline is really well balanced between defensive stoppers, intercept markers and users of the ball coming out of defence. To my eye the only weaknesses are someone to mark elite small forwards, and a little bit of cover for our tall defenders (if A Pearce gets injured we’ll be a little exposed).

I’m curious who gets the credit for this?

The players were put together largely under Bond’s reign. Alex Pearce (pick 37) Luke Ryan (pick 66) were steals in the draft, the Hamling and Wilson trades have worked well, and they have been complimented by good rookie picks in Hughes, Duman and Nyhuis. We’re still yet to see what the highest pick of them all in Logue can do (or if he even is a defender at all). But all up, you’d have to give Bond some credit.

Coaches get a lot of the blame when things don’t go well, but you’d have to say Lyon, Prior and Hayden deserve some credit in rebuilding and developing the defenders into a strong unit in the space of a couple of seasons.

But for mine, I reckon the players themselves deserve a heap of credit. Watching how they work together is really encouraging, and from the outside they look like they are playing for each other a bit. There is a good chance A Pearce will be the next captain. The best part is they average in the early-mid 20s, meaning there’s a chance for us to have a cohesive unit for a few years yet.

Exciting times.

Hayden coaching must be having some impact on the lads in the backline, and they are getting some game time together, learning how each other plays. .
Logue is the bloke I recon we should be using as an inside mid / big bodied mid not a defender. He is an athlete not a footyhead. We have a few blokes that can read the ball well and distribute well in the backline already. Not sure if the playing him in the back is to help him learn to read the play better and develop his defensive side of his game. Time will tell, but Chuck him in the guts I say!.

I'm not as impressed with the back line as some people. My thoughts on the first quarter on Sunday were that as soon as the ball rolled along the ground they all fainted. It wasn't until numbers flooded back that there were able to keep Brisbane under control.

I don't think they rebound very well, considering the talent. You rarely see them switch the play with any urgency and they seem reluctant to run the ball out of defence as a group. Maybe I've just spoiled from watching the likes of Scott Thornton over the years.

People how quickly do you forget The Fist.....back then we had method and a well oiled machine like understanding of the game....it was all defence, defence and defending the defencers. Then again not much has changed.......which brings me to ask.....What would Jordan Lewis do?? Given that he's likely to be our next coach and all.

A method that was about spoiling the ball out of play, rinse and repeat. Gee I miss those days [/Shane]

Bit more spring off half back is needed. Ryan has Johnno's third man up marking mastered but doesn't have his rebound. Johnson was a genius at creating space and putting the ball in dangerous areas - you don't replace that over night.

But you are right Morgan, they've done well. It also really highlights my firm believe that the draft is about the quality of your pick and not how early it is. Pearce at 37. You'd be happy right now if he was your number 1 pick.

And wasn't Lyon happy with them after the game?

Its like it was Christmas, what with all that hugging.

That explains the NDAs being handed out in the change rooms after the game.

Hypen, our current coaching staff did a pretty good job of taking away space overnight. Blokes like Ryan, Wilson, Hamling & Pearce should be able to do a good job of finding it again, once the shackles are cut.

You’re a hard marker Shane. It’s a really good unit that has played elite footy at times this year. Probably my main criticism is that the booming kicks like Wilson and Ryan have a tendency to just boot a drop punt as far as they can without really looking. But it’s a minor criticism as they are generally under the pump. Hughes looks a little overwhelmed at times, and is one of a number of Fremantle players that has lost faith in their own ability to hit a target.

But otherwise it’s a pretty great back 6. Unfortunately it is well past time that Fremantle had a great front 6.

Our defence is pretty good, against Brisbane Wilson and Ryan gave good rebound. Our only real struggle was a match up for Cameron but he is hard to match up on.

I miss the fist as he played a role in our defence back when Johnno and Macpharlan could provide the run, but Pearce and Hamling are doing very well.

It's not everyone gets a trophy day, goodie. They are good players who play consistently but when the ball goes down there, the opposition get a scoring shot away as often as they don't. And late in games they will often get carved up.

At 700 points conceded we're second behind Geelong with 688 conceded - that's enough for me to say damn good. Our scoring puts us in 11th.

I don't accept the premise that points conceded is a direct reflection on the quality of your back line.

Of course the case against the defence is that not letting people kick goals is only half a game of footy.

Flooding back, clogging space and forcing a congested game will only work sometimes but it doesn't work against the (here we go again) more skilled sides as they can move the ball forward to the advantage of their players.

Our back six get marks for stopping some of the opposition attacks but get low marks for acting as a springboard for our own attacks. I wouldn't go getting too gooey over getting half a job done well. There is significant improvement required from our defensive unit.
Egurls Suck!
