The good:
i. The crowd in the last quarter and the game generally. It was a really fun game, with both teams prepared to take the game on, albeit both teams burned too many chances. We were a bit lucky Brisbane didn’t hit the scoreboard more in the second.
ii. Wilson doing his best Scott Chisholm impression. He was all over the shop yesterday: some of it was terrible, some of it was amazing, but I think on balance it was a net positive for Freo. It was great to see him play with a bit of adventure, and his kicking was sublime.
iii. Brad Hill had a great bounce-back game after a few bad performances.
iv. Our fitness staff cop a pasting on here, and not without some historical evidence on the injury front; but our players have finished games strongly, and again yesterday we ran over a team in the last quarter. Some of that can be chalked up to us taking the game on, but we needed the legs to do it and we did. I reckon that will give the players a bit of confidence. If you think you are going to run over your opponent, it can become self-fulfilling.
The bad:
i. Hogan looks at sea. I think he’s trying to play that in-between game, where his leads are ending 65m from goal, and players just aren’t using him. I reckon we’d be better off using CamMac in that lead-up role, and in Tabs absence try and get Hogan closer to goal.
ii. Andy Brayshaw looks allergic to kicking goals. He snagged one without thinking in the first, and I’d hoped that would give him some confidence, but then later in the game he seemed determined to avoid kicking one. We’ve got a few too many players who you know they’ll miss as soon as they start their run-up, including guys like Fyfe and Langdon who should be a bit better than they are.
iii. Ross Lyon’s hugs after the game. He has a real ‘weird step Dad who wants you to like him’ vibe going on.
