Had a good look at the Essendon game last night, forced myself to watch it.

When we hit the corridor we created scoring chances from an open forward line, with players running out from goal to the ball.

I'd love to know the entries to scoring ratio when using the boundary to score goals. Its so obvious its not working, that its giving the opposition time to push numbers back.

I saw a piece of play in the first quarter where Wilson or Walters had the ball deep in defence, he looked wide and said "nup, I'm kicking it in the middle to Mundy, I will show a bit of the ball to his Essendon opponent but I'll back Mundy". Mundy won the mark, down the guts to Fyfe and Fyfe into an open forward line. Ed Langdon or Matera it was I think who marked and goaled.

Its so obvious its the right way to go and I don't believe they are under instructions to "hug the line". I think the question is how much risk is the coach prepared to take or is it the player? Are the players scared to take on the corridor?

Do we need to put our better kicks in better parts of the ground to transition properly?

I think they'd have to be under instruction to hug the line, otherwise at some point over the past three years someone would have done something to corrected it. Ross would have hammered them with the message about using the corridor like every other coach who's ever wanted their team to use the corridor.

I think what you're missing is that if you go through the middle and there's no one forward of you, you will get killed on the rebound when you inevitably lose the ball. Ross likes to get the ball into the forward line, create a stoppage and only then set up a forward line.

And here's the problem with setting up from a forward line stoppage. The opponent has flooded back, we have marked each opponent cause we don't like being outnumbered at the ball, if they win the ball we seem to get nailed on transition and they have an open forward line to work with.

And that was happening repeatedly last Saturday night. Or did it just seem that way?

I don't think he is giving that specific message Shane, I think players get smacked by Lyon on turnover scores - so the boundary becomes their friend.

Hasleby was urging encouragement for our rebounding backs - Wilson, Ryan - to be free to take the game on more, and to get better support when so doing.
Other teams might have a cluster of runners to handball off to and create run through the middle; we seem always to be zoning away and not shepherding for the ball carrier.

I'm with Shane on this, they must be being coached to play the boundary/stoppage game. Otherwise players would be dragged, dropped and traded for doing it. It seems to be the opposite, players playing the stoppage/boundary game are revered by Lyon. Look at how he supported Dawson.

It makes so much obvious sense that the quicker you get the ball forward, the less opposition you will have to beat, but anyone who preaches that at Freo gets locked out.

But the benefit to setting up from a forward line stoppage is that the coaches remain in control of everything and they can plan it ahead of time, reducing workload on match day.

Shane you are 100% correct about hugging the boundary and as you pointed out if and when we do come through the middle who do we kick it too (jess is normally played up the wing or sometimes HB)
Do you think other Coaches now fully understand our game plan and plan to use it to there advantage ?
