Completely agree RM we need to be a more skilled and efficient team to improve.

I think statistically the number of goals and behinds kicked in a game is usually about 50:50. Sometimes when a team flogs the opposition the ratio of goals to behinds is higher. Its definitely an area we need to work on because it produces wins when we actually kick the bloody thing straight which also involves firstly kicking it in to the 50 effectively to give our forwards a chance. Results so far this year (opposition/accuracy/result):

North - 21:15 58% Win
Suns - 8:10 44% Loss
Saints - 11:5 69% Win
Toilet - 7:14 33% Loss
GWS - 16:10 62% Win
Dogs - 13:10 - 57% Win
Crows - 5:4 - 55% Loss
Tigers - 12:14 46% Loss
Bombers - 7:11 39% Loss

Total 100:93 = 52%

Considering we have generally been losing by less than 4 goals it is quite obvious how crucial it is to better convert and to also hit targets inside the 50. Too many of our shots on goal are out wide as a result of our game plan which uses the boundary and also lots of hurried shots on goal under pressure from a stoppage or boundary throw in instead of forwards being having a shot after being hit on the chest.

If our coach is going to persist with a game style which limits the number of entries we have and the quality of delivery then we better bloody well start scoring at least 60:40 ratio of goals to behinds. Because this game style demands this kind of accuracy to win regardless of how much contested ball we win.

Teams which generate more shots on goal and and easier shots on goal have the luxury of being a bit less accurate.

The cats are clinical when the get in inside fifty and lot of this has to do with the quality of delivery and where players take marks.

Very interesting to compare some other stats to see if Geelong are better than us in other aspects of the game:

From the above it is quite evident either our skills are just crap or our method is crap resulting in a high number of turnovers and less accuracy on goal, or a combination of both.

All of which is what the head coach is accountable for.

The players are evidently putting in the required effort, following the game plan and having a real crack in all the games we are playing. We are on par with the best team in the league at winning enough possession and giving ourselves a chance to get it somewhere near the forward fifty.

The method is quite obviously the problem because we are playing a style which results in lots of turnovers. We don't take enough marks to move the ball forward because we don't have players running to the right spots or we butcher the kick. These two are related because when we don't take a mark we turn it over and it goes the other way. When we do get it forward we miss a lot because players are marking the ball out wide or it is bombed in and we don't take a mark and try and kick a goal from a stoppage. Or we turn it over and have to run all the way to the other end of the ground which is incredibly tiring for our players.

We are too predictable with how we try and move the ball which makes it easier for opposition coaches to come up with plans on how to defend against us and force turnovers. They know it is rare we will try and use the corridor in a risk vs reward situation and when we do we don't have anyone to kick it to anyway.

It's no good focusing on winning the battle in the middle at all costs because unless we are cleaner with our ball use the same results will happen over and over again.

Yes Morgan, the forwards look lost. When they should pass it off, they have a shot. When they should have a shot they try a dinky short pass that gets intercepted.
I guess the problem is that while defense is very much a team thing, kicking goals is all about individual glory. You need forwards who are selfish enough to back themselves, but smart enough to share it around. Right now ours aren't sure if they are Arthur or Martha.

Another stat is we rank the 3rd highest team in the number of disposals from the opposition. So for all our good work around the ball and deep in defence the other sides manage to rack up a lot of disposals. Opposition coaches know the best best way to cut through us is a bit of run and carry and a few quick handballs and short kicks to throw our players out of position. It sucks our midfielders in to try and tackle and win the ball back then they just run straight past us.

And looking back in history in 2013 we ranked 15th and 12th for inside 50s and marks inside 50. Not exactly a positive thing for a team which won the 3rd most contested possessions for the season. The hawks ranked 1 and 2 in both categories and were just behind us in terms of contested possession. They also ranked highest for uncontested possession.

We do what we do, I reckon, in part because of all the tall forwards we are playing. Three talls back is good and Duman showed how useful that was last week. But the three forward isn't working.
Too many fish. Bring in a runner a ground ball player and take out Cox. We might move it faster and better and not bomb it so often.

Nah, Larkin, use of the footy is the problem, along with leading patterns. All the player changes in the world are not going to make as much difference as allowing the players to play footy. Our problems stem from the opposition only having to defend 2 corridors about 10 meters wide, 1 down each boundary line.
