TOPIC: Rating the players

Down on down Rating the players 4 years 10 months ago #1

Down on down
I saw a comment on one of the Dockerland threads after the Essendon game about our players showing no real improvement this season, compared to last season. Therefore, I have compiled a list of players who have worn the guernsey for us this year and provided an opinion on whether there is indeed any discernible improvement.

Ballantyne- Will not see any improvement. Now injury prone. Probably his last year.
Matera - Definitely an improvement. Kicked 13 goals in 17 games last year, already has 17 goals from 8 games this year *
Darcy - Played injured, then dropped, stagnated at Peel, now injured. No Improvement.
Cerra - No improvement. Has gone backwards. I can't seem him staying once his contract expires.
Conca- Steady but without being a game changer.
Fyfe- Is just Fyfe. Can't say he has improved though.
Brayshaw- Tries hard but can't kick and for a number 2 pick that is unforgivable. No improvement.
B.Hill- Too inconsistent. No improvement.
Walters. Quality but no improvement. Is playing for free kicks way too much.
Hogan- Not the saviour we had envisaged. Kicking skills and accuracy have decreased dramatically.
Wilson- Has had the creativity strangled out of him. No improvement
Hughes- Has improved with greater game time and continuity in defence.*
Mundy- Like a fine wine getting better with age.*
Tucker- Slight improvement and like Hughes benefitting from continuity in holding his position*
Blakely- Cannot judge based on one game.
Taberner- Tries hard but appears to be treading water. No improvement
Hamling- Gives 100% all the time and definitely improvement*
MaCarthy- One good game- now back to 2018 form. No improvement.
Pearce- One of our best this year. Improvement *
Langdon- Up and down this year. No improvement
Schultz - 2 games and new to club so hard to judge
Colyer- Dead wood.
Cox- No improvement
Lobb - The best of our new recruits
Ryan- Hasn't improved, hasn't regressed, but still one of our best performers
Switkowski- Tries hard but no improvement
Banfield-Limited opportunities but no improvement from limited viewing this year'
Duman- Definitely improved*
Nyhuis- Definitely improved *

29 players tried this year and by my humble opinion only 8 showing any form of improvement. Would like to hear other Dockerlanders views on this.

DoD,

I wouldn't dispute too much of that tbh but I will disagree over Mundy. He hasn't improved, he just keeps reminding us of his quality...which is amazingly high considering most blokes his age have faded away. I reckon find a Fountain of Youth and sign him up for a decade.

Hogan hasn't been used to his best value as he's spent too much time up field and not closer to goal where he should be. I think the lack of skills training is starting to show on his deteriorating accuracy. I'm not prepared to write him down on the season thus far. McCarthy is better than being sent back to Peel implies and for Tabs, you can read my Hogan comments as I think he's in a similar boat.

Switta is a bit up and down. On song, he's definitely improved but he's so inconsistent its hard to identify that.

I think the rest is not too far wrong so far this season

Pretty good summation DoD. Agree that it's hard to get any more improvement from Fyfe and Mundy. Don't think they could actually do much more.
I would add Ryan to the improved list though. Our backline has been great. It must be bloody hard watching other teams stream through the middle with your opponent having plenty of space to move into and then see the opposite happen in your own forward line.

If I can rate certain games or periods of games I can clearly see team improvement. We have played better footy than all of last couple of years...but not often enough.
The gws game was not a fluke...we executed well. But our response and attitude has swung back to total opposition strangulation. The plan B, plan C and D...and a major part of plan A: restrict scoring.
Bah...

I would agree with most of that but do think Taberner and Ryan have also both improved.

In terms of team improvement the only thing we are better at this year is defending as we have all of best defenders available including Pearce. So we are not copping beltings but we are certainly not moving the ball any better or using it any more efficiently.

I consider round 1 to be a bit of anomaly because North Melbourne were just downright terrible.

Whilst I wouldn't call the GWS game a fluke I think it is unrealistic we can replicate that kind of goal kicking accuracy of 16.10 regularly (Matera kicked 4.0, Hogan 3.0, Walters 3.1 and Taberner 3.3). Plus our defenders played out of their skins and GWS were inaccurate with 11.16 for the game. Our current game style may be produced one of these results occasionally but a lot has to go our way for it to happen.

I miss Shane Richmond's editing. Anyone who thinks that Cerra and Brayshaw are anything but future stars being asked to do the work of blokes who ideally would have had five pre seasons are bloody idiots.

Then in the next breath, "oh Hughes and Tucker have stepped up". Yeah boofheads they have had four years in the system.

The players are not the problem.

Don't think that's the point Hypen. I'm sure their potential isn't being questioned, but their level this year compared to last year. So maybe Shane didn't see any need for editing.

CA, I think our defense does well because they are reacting to the tactics of the opposition coach, not (with the exception of the kickouts) following the Mantra of Lyon.

KK, why the hell shouldn't we expect our goalkickers to kick with a 66% accuracy rate??? If they spent enough time practising their goalkicking it would happen regularly.

16.10 is around 61% accuracy. Perfectly acceptable. A solid game we had!
But bloody 5.4 in a whole game?
Bloody 7 goals in an indoor stadium? And to add insult we kick our last three in about 5 minutes of the last stinking quarter!! Something changed in that 5 minutes. What was it it? Tell us Ross, so we can better understand...because as a standalone stat it makes no sense to me at all. So, we score 57% of our goals (4) in approximately (120 mins of footy) and the other 43% of our goals come in 4% of total game time. Tell us now Ross...what happened in that glorious 5 minutes of attacking footy?

I didn’t see much of the game on Saturday on account of the election, but there was a bit I did see that was telling. Essendon kicked a scrubby kick into their forward line, Ryan and Wilson were both running at it from different directions. Not only did they each know who was going for the ball (Ryan, obviously), Wilson got out of his way and knowing Ryan would win it peeled off to get the receive and launch the other way.

That is the type of instinctive play that happens hundreds of times a game and is what decides matches. Hundreds and hundreds of micro-decisions.

That raises the question of how Ryan and Wilson knew to do that? Was it the coaches’ instructions, the players being smart, experience playing with each other, a combination, or something else? My view is that it’s mostly a combination of smart players and repetition. Wilson knew Ryan would straight-line the ball, and Wilson knows he’s a good kick, so they instinctively figured it out.

Contrast that with the forward line, where you can bet any two forwards would probably run into each other.

I think coaches have a role to play in making the game work for the players, and speeding up the teamwork process, but there’s no substitute for players being on the park together. In that sense, our backline is miles ahead of our forward line, and also ahead of our midfield. I don’t think it’s a coincidence our best midfield combination is Fyfe, Mundy and Walters.

I also feel for a bloke like Cerra. He just doesn’t have the experience or confidence to be in the right spot. In another year he and Brayshaw will instinctively know where some of their players are and can concentrate on their disposal. At the moment it’s all still a blur, and their kicking is suffering.

Some combination of Tabs, Hogan, Cox and Lobb will be really good for Freo eventually, but they look miles away.

hypen says 'The players are not the problem'
Well actually they are. They dont kick goals they should and they are not finding targets that are there. They are close in most losing games but muck it up with skills failures. Its not as if they are being thrashed in games like last year - they are just a little bit off. A little luck a little momentum a split second is all that it can take to turn the corner.

It takes a special kind of coach to fatigue Jesse Hogan to the point where he is inaccurate on goal.

There is a direct link between the skills and a) how much they being asked to do and b) their field position. They're a tired disorganized mess.

Jesse dropped a simple mark straight in front 10 mins into the game. Walters missed a snap from 25 in front not long after.

I think it's letting them off the hook to say they are tired.

I can't attribute every error to the coach, you know that Morgan.

I'm also sure on some level you take my point about Lyon's ways.
