TOPIC: Midfield Worries

I'm not sure RR. Maybe? We've never really been very good at switching play. We've tended to go down the line a bit, and then relied on exceptional kicks like Johnno to centre the ball, and more recently Wilson launch the ball over the first wave of defenders. Certainly at the moment we seem a bit too inclined to just blast it long to the tall targets.

I reckon guys like Lobb, Hogan and Tabs are a bit like the new flashy lights at the stadium. They are cool and new and everyone wants to try them out, but sometimes less is more.

I reckon we'll get there, but the balance is a bit off at the moment.

No RR cos we would chip it around until we lost it. Remember the old days of chipping it around and running around in circles. Our skills aren’t good enough.

Lot's of pretty stats, Morgan, but what I saw last year and see this year is that Wilson has not had the same impact on games since moving to Freo that he had while playing at GWS. Unless the reason we recruited him was so he could come home, he has not been used properly. Which goes back to the topic, why is our midfield malfunctioning.

I don't claim that statistics tell the whole story RM, but they tell a part of the story; and the part they tell suggests he's basically the same player for us as he was for GWS.

I also don't claim to watch more than a handful of GWS games a year, so perhaps I missed the unquantifiable aspects of Wilson’s games at GWS. What was he doing at GWS that isn’t captured by stats like disposals, marks, disposal efficiency, meters gained, intercepts, clearances, rebound 50s, inside 50s and score involvements?

I think meters gained is probably the stat that sums up Wilson the best. At GWS he averaged 504m/game, and at Freo he averaged 503/game last season. He’s a bit down this year at 460, but as discussed, I think some of that is accounted for by Ryan going from 350 to 460.

I don't dispute all the stats Morgan, but to what effect? He got the ball into GWS forward line and they scored goals. He gets the footy into Freo's forward line and it comes right back at him, or as I said earlier he gets pinged while searching for options.

Back on topic; I don't think we have midfield worries, we win centre clearances, we win clearances, we get the footy inside 50 as often as anyone, we hold opponents to lower scores than almost all other teams. BUT we don't score ourselves, I hardly think the mids or defenders are at fault for that. I don't need to say again where I think the blame lies.

RM, from where I watch we don't win centre clearances, at least not often enough. Or maybe we do, but we don't get the ball out into clear space where we can do something with it. I'm more worried about the midfield than anything else.

RR, we win the centre clearance, but then have nowhere to kick it because all 6 forwards are generally sprinting for half back.
