I thought the turning point of last week's game was the 50 metre penalty when Bradley Hill threw grass...an obscure rule that I can't remember ever being enforced before.

What did Rampe do wrong? He didn’t intentionally shake the goalpost. If the goalpost shook (and that is far from proven), surely it was an incidental consequence of Rampe climbing the goalpost.

There appears to be no rule against players climbing the goalpost.

Two things:

i. What was the umpire doing telling a player to stop doing something it appears he was entitled to do?

ii. Dane Rampe needs a nickname.

He did shake the goalpost intentionally, by climbing it. The umpire erred by warning him and not paying the free kick. Like the Hill incident, you can gauruntee a free would have been awarded if it was involving a Freo player.

Zorro, by your reckoning, frees should not be paid against players who tackle others without the ball, push opponents in the back, because they did not intentionally do it.... Oh I see your point.

They brought the rule in several years ago. You can't throw stuff. The rule doesn't get used much because everyone has learnt not to do it.

Seriously guys - get a grip. A non decision in a game that didn’t involve Freo turns into an opportunity for our supporters to play the umpire anti Freo victimisation card ... again.
Hill threw something at the kicker which rightly deserved a free kick.
Rampe was equally silly and probably deserved to have a free paid against him as should any player from any club.

Time for us to stop playing the hard done by little brothers.

Matthew Lloyd uaed to throw grass. Never saw him get a 50m against him for doin' it. Could have seriously hurt someone with his grass throwing......

Brad Hill does it once...and he's pinged!! And we lose a game because of it.!

The view from my one purple eye , is, that, that is clear cut bias & favouritism towards a Victorian established club....

I haven't said anything about Bradley's grass hucking because I actually thought it was really funny. I recognise the cost of it, but I still think it was hilarious - stupid, but stupid funny nonetheless.

The same thing with the awkward post climb attempt - stupid funny, the bloke was hopeless in trying to get up high enough to affect a spoil, yet the thinking behind it was really funny.

Perhaps that's just me - both looked really stupid and both were really funny. For me, keep stupid funny in the game.

I think however that all the hoo-ha around the application of rules in footy would be silenced substantially if they got rid of the need of an umpy to determine 'intentionality'. Get rid of the word, it's a crap shoot at best - leave it to 'did' or 'didn't'.

Except of course he didn't throw grass at the player. He just didn't. It was a feign plain and simple. Throwing grass at 20 metres against the wind with purpose is impossible.
