He could have worn a mask and a leotard and hit the bloke with a chair, jumping from the top of a ladder and the AFL would say 'play on'.

Which is fine and not netball, so long as everyone gets to play.

The AFL web site reports that the tribunal members considered their verdict for a whole 3 minutes! A foregone conclusion, maybe?

BI can’t remember what decision it was last year, perhaps Fyfe, I thought it stayed that once somebody is hit by an elbow deliberate is the only outcome.
How can the media one week decry tribunal outcomes, and the next week run a campaign to forego the punishment meted out that correctly applied the criteria?
No wonder there are inconsistencies.

Nah, Polly, can't agree with you this time, the rights or wrongs have nothing to do with the decision. It is all about the media campaign to get Ablett off. They are running the tribunal. Look at the headlines from the last 2 weeks in the worst.

Fyfe & Freo face a nervous wait to see if the MRP will suspend him.

West Coast's Hurn has no case to answer.

The AFL is so transparently and proudly corrupt, it's not funny.

I've previously taken the opportunity, when the topic allowed, to offer my opinion that the AFL seems to be hopelessly lost and compromised between it's twin roles of sports governance and money-making machine. The interfering media adds another layer of confusion, with their constant analysis of "who's-in-trouble-this-week" apparently pre-determining supposedly independent MOR and tribunal decisions. The AFL/media relationship too often gives an impression of the tail wagging the dog.

US journo Walter Kronite visited Australia decades ago and was asked what he thought. A media question still asked, and shows Australia retains its cultural cringe of needy international validation.

He said "Too many journalists, not enough news". This manifests in the often petty content the media deems newsworthy, to the influence they exert focusing on these, inflating them as real issues.

It also keep people like Barrett and Hutchinson on TV, when they could be doing something useful, like holding up stop signs at roadworks, while Caro tells them where to dig.

Don't give them that job for chrissakes, they will change the meaning of Stop & Go everytime they hold up the sign. As for digging, they know how to do that, they just don't know what to do with the dirt.

Ryokan nailed it a fair while ago

What was right yesterday is wrong today
In what is right today, how do you know it was not wrong yesterday?
There is no right or wrong, no predicting gain or loss.

Clearly the tribunal has its own Zen master. Michael Christian?

I think the issue is the AFL has to change the criteria the MRO acts on, by the definition given Christian had no option but to suspend, but then the tribunal can have more discretion, I personally think incidents like this warrant a fine not a suspension. So the MRO criteria should be changed to reflect this.

As for the media, I dont watch any footy programs, they are all just windbags and over analyse everything and are paid to give opinions I often think they dont actually believe in, they make it up because they have to fill in an hour.

I sometimes listen to Saturday morning radio, the callers are usually more entertaining than the panel and more insightful, except Don from Spearwood who is a goose.

As for print sports journos, a thousand typewriters and a thousand monkeys comes to mind.

I've never heard of this Kronite fella, but Cronkite was a bit of a legend (albeit a grumpy sod).

How's this Coyler guy traveling at the moment - has he recovered all those generations of his family or has he decided to start over from scratch?
