TOPIC: Tactics

I don't mind going backwards if you then end up nicely composed and deliver the ball well. I get scared when I see the opposition go backwards and realise that the pressure has gone off them and they can now deliver the ball well.
Of course going backwards and then kicking to a pack or kicking over your shoulder while under pressure are not good ideas.

Right on Bizkit, going backwards is going backwards. That has been my argument against the supposed genius of Lyon. It is the only way he knows, and it partially works when the opposition releases the pressure as you go back, but once they wake up and keep the pressure on you are in trouble. The forward defensive pressure was what bought our success early in Lyon's tenure, but the good sides realised they had to go forward not back and across if they wanted to release the pressure. It was not our lack of pressure which saw us being beaten. Lyon could not bring himself to admit he was being outcoached so we are stuck in 2013 along with a few other losers while the rest of the comp is steaming ahead.

But RM, if the opposition keep the pressure on as you go back (as both Adelaide and us did) they'll end up exhausted. Which is why Ross is usually happy to let the opposition have the ball and use a zone defense.

I remember Geelong in their heyday. They'd happily throw together half a dozen handpasses under immense pressure, going forward, backwards and sideways until an opportunity presented - and then they were away. You have to be very good to do that, and to have played together a bit. We'll get there.

You don't have to be exceptionally skilled to pass under pressure, you just have to practise it.

The Eagles won a flag and they have absolutely no fear in going backwards or slow play. They back their skills to maintain possession until they see the right option and then they pull the trigger and it’s off to the races.

And I think we all (or almost all) agreed on D/L that they were lucky to win that flag. As an aside to the topic, I think it is Margetts & co who are pulling the trigger for them.

I think Polly is on the right track. In some sense I think we actually attacked too much. We rushed particularly the final kick into the 50, often to a 2/1 or to the opposition advantage. This played right into Adelaides hands.

We needed a bit more composure somewhere between 50-100m away from our goal.

The last kick either needed to be held up or looking for other options in the corridor

Holding the kick up in the backline is the start of our problems in attack. Don't compound the problem.

If Lobb is put into the forward line & Darcy is brought back in to take on the full ruck load - that's what he's at Freo for - then, logically, there's no room for Cammac in the best 22.

Moving the ball quickly into the forward 50 doesn't seem to be the problem; it's who's there, moving intelligently toward the kick & how well they're working together.

Not sure that's all that logical Dockermus. You're saying Lobb is a direct replacement for Cam but they are completely different players who play completely different forward roles.

I agree Ricco, that final push into 50 arc seemed rushed at times, unnecessarily so. If no clear leads the kick to advantage is the go...or to a one on one to advantage, eg tab in 3rd q? But indiscriminate bombs are only used when their is no other option.
And yep Raggy, all are skilled, but need to practice the act under pressure.
Apologies...repeating the already said, and probably the obvious.

Could we grubber it inside 50 if we are being beaten in the air? Once the ball is bouncing around inside 50 there's always a chance that a goal appears.

What I'm suggesting, DS, is that the forward line might function better if Lobb played mostly forward. The Gold Coast game seemed to show that 4 big blokes up front was unwieldy, so if only 3 of 4 can be on the field together, I think that should be Hogan, Taberner and Lobb. and I don't see Cammac having a role in our best 22. It's the one permutation that's not been tried so far, after McCarthy got his chance in Rd 1, because of Hogan's club suspension, and has played every game since.
