TOPIC: Tactics

We should have used the Gary "Whiskas"Hocking super coach supertactic and had all our players in the defensive fifty.

Come to think of it I think that's what we did, see Ross has learnt from the best.

I think deep down most of us know how to avoid a repeat of that game. Unfortunately, instead of it being implemented it will probably lead to an increase in the term of the contract.

I thought we'd run over them in the last. Those 50's cost us the game. Both coaches did what they did for a reason - one got lucky.

What did luck have to do with it?

The so called lucky team had seven more scoring shots while the supposedly unlucky team only had nine scoring shots in total and kicked the second lowest total in the club's history.

Maybe the lucky team were better coached, set up better, or took their opportunities.

I actually enjoyed the game CA. You could say giving away those 50's was lucky for someone.

You could say giving away those 50's was stupid and cost us dearly.

Throwing grass, really - The player was 20 metres away. And that dropping the ball scam near the bouncdry was dodgy too but yeah he was out of order. But I dont ever recall a game umpired as permissively as that one - even in a grand final. Were the coaches and teams warned before the game? Whatever I do think it contributed to the spectacle and I dont think it helped us. Was that luck?

In terms of tactics what we need is a link player forward of centre - someone that can deliver a good ball in from the middle of the arc. It may take one medium kick, or two short kicks to bring it in off the boundary. If not, run it through with a chain of handball - which increases the likelihood of a turnover.

Someone like Lynch (Crows) or Kelly (Cats) - we've got the players to do this. Once the ball is in the middle of the ground leading into the forward fifty you've got a wealth of space for the forwards to spread the defence and open up an opportunity.

That's what we needed to do against the Crows - not all the time, with an extra defender they would simply adjust to it. That's why you have a few possible approaches.

If you watched the replay you would see that we did that Poly. Adelaide just swamped us. Watching the replay you see that the ball was in play for most of the game – not at the bottom of packs – like we might remember.
Back to the boundary 50 metre penalty it was late in the last 6.35 left on the clock – we were building and only 6 points down and Tucker takes a mark on the boundary line about 75 metres out from Adelaides goal – not obviously over – and from where I sit at Perth you see marks or balls taken every week over the boundary line.

Polly I thought Lyon tried that late with Cerra. I thought he looked to use his skills to try and get some better delivery, unfortunately he got his hands on it and was found a little wanting under the heat of a very physical tight AFL game.
Stephen Hill would be quite handy.

Whereas Tucker couldn't find a target so he just kicked the goal earlier. But all the long kicks up the boundary followed by a bomb into the forward fifty filled almost every movement forward. I've seen plenty of that over the past three years - time to think differently, earlier in the game (and not as a last ditch tactic).

Polly, it will work, but only with quick, forward ball movement. No matter what the opposition want to do, they can't beat the footy if it is moved forward with urgency, as Freo have found to our cost many times over the last 7 years.

More time on skills, means less gut running required, so a more sustainable and potent game strategy.

I think it should be added, our set up at clearances is pretty horrible and an indication of the mindset of the coach and players. There were two separate occasions in the final 10min where Sonny picked up the ball and dodged players running +30m backwards, giving the one/two and kicking a further 20m backwards.

It's always appeared that the players are instructed to direct the footy backwards as a first point of reference to set up the play which is a mistake. It gives the opposition time to set up ahead of the ball and results in us kicking to a pack down the line (in those two occasions it was a pack formed exactly where Sonny had won the ball, effectively giving it back to Adelaide where he got it from) at which we'll be outnumbered since we have spare players behind the ball waxing in defence.

it's a flawed defensive approach and RL has no answers to it. Run and carry which should be coached into the players is the way to beat it. You need players playing instinctive footy, knowing where players are moving to and how to get through traffic. 5 blokes standing motionless off the back of a scrum waiting to get the footy and then proceed further backwards is not a premiership winning tactic (or a decent tactic whatsoever).
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.
