I still think Cammac can play as a big-bodied small forward, and be used to feed off the talls. He does do that well, and it is a big part of his game when he is playing well.

You're thinking of McCarthy as a tall when he's not. He's taller than most small/medium defenders so he can play that way on someone shorter than him but he's not a contested marking tall forward.

The problem is we wrongfully played him as one for so long as we had no other KPF's, people have labelled him as a tall KPF. He is a crumber who moves well on the ground and has a bit of size. He should be played as a flanker who can exploit defenders for height, not as competition for high balls.

He's in competition for spots with Matera, Swit, Schulz and Ballantyne (Tucker too who was forced into the cursed defensive forward role against Adelaide).
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

This is an interesting article, that could be extrapolated a little further

Bring Back the Contest

What the stat doesn't show, but possibly could is the differential between contested and uncontested post-stoppage possessions. I have believed for some considerable time that the Cats, Pies, GWS & the Hawks of early this decade have/had success because they are/were not afraid to kick to a contest, albiet kicking to the advantage of their teammate in that contest. A skill which Freo don't seem to be honing.

We are fourth on that list not too far off it.
We could definitely improve in our efficiency at kicking to the advantage of our tall options, coupled with that all of those options need to aggressively ensure that they provide a contest even if that delivery is not perfect. At this point, Taberner is the only big, forward of the ball who consistently does this.

Yes Matt, we can win stoppages, but particularly in our losing games, we are butchering that inside 50 kick.
More control/skill at the won stoppage/clearance, and more vision and spread by the forwards in anticipation of clearance coming their way. And by spread, I mean some alternative options. The backs have to react and maybe free up one on ones. If Hogan, Tab, Lobb, even Matera are given at least a 50 50 chance with the incoming ball, I would back them to win out most times.
But when you see the ball kicked to a stationary tall fwd with three defenders around him...I groan, swear, curse, call for coach sackings, swear some more...and finally look for the cat post loss.

It's a small thing, but a decent shepherd would do wonders for crating space and time and reducing pressure on the delivery. It's like the one percenter that becomes the 10 x multiplier on effectiveness of other tactics.

Not talking huge hits, just get in the road of the chaser, don’t run along 1 metre away looking for the handball receive. If you do happen to dish it off keep your mind switched on and take another 2, 3, 5 steps to make a shepherd.

Seriously, it does wonders, but not even Fyfe and Mundy could work it out in the 4th and ran into each other. It’s one of those teamwork things that has so long been out of Freo’s communal understanding wavelengths.

CA, all that really matters is that the Dockers score more points than Dusty & Co.

Meanwhile, I don't usually set more store on what Quartermaine and the Worst have to say, but I don't mind when they agree with me:

".... forward Cam McCarthy remains under pressure to hold his place after failing to kick a goal in his past two games.

If McCarthy is dropped .... it could open the door for discarded ruckman Sean Darcy to return, with versatile big man Rory Lobb able to move to the forward line to complement Matt Taberner and Jesse Hogan."

Mushroom, following up with a shepherd after you handpass was something our U/12 coach drummed into us, and he never claimed to be, or had aspirations to be a VFL/AFL coach. Maybe he should have.

Arms outstretched, keeping the chaser away from your team mate, telling your mate he has time, all team stuff which still warms my heart.

Yes a win is a win Dmus but if they want to get bums on seats, sell merchandise, etc they can't afford to keep dishing up that sort of stuff.

So is Rory good at that? "Gee Jesse, you are moving so well. I reckon you must be one of the fittest blokes in the AFL." "Wow Matt, that was some contested grab! I don't know why we don't just kick it to you all day long."

That's Rory complimenting the other big forwards...
