Yesterdays game - as a spectacle - really was a shocker, and footy is going to " Hell in a handbasket" if it keeps going this way.

Yesterday we saw 2 teams play the entire game alomg the boundary line - there was complete refusal to switcb or go through the centre on too many occasions.

The preference - partcularly from us - was to boot it down the line , get it out of bounds, then set up for the ruck knock in the hope that yoi again get posession of the ball. So you can do.exactly th3 same again.

We at Freo know how it goes....

Both teams did it, the Crows went away from the boundary more times than Freo, and that probably won them the match.

Look at the" possession heatmap" on the AFL website of both teams. Its like there were doublegees on all but one side of Adelaide oval.!

Our game is at its greatest when teams are gooing "through the middle" but, its something rarely seen these days- particularly if you are a fremantle supporter.!

None of the recent rule changes have stopped this from happening. In fact maybe, they have encouraged this style of play. The full backs can now plonk a ball onto the centre wing and the set up can occur from their rather than half back.

The 666 rule makes play after a centre bounce a bit more attractive, but does nothing once the ba is in general play.

I resent rule changes, but I'm thinking the only thing that could/will stop coaches (particularly ours) doing what they did yesterday, is get rid of the boundary throw in, and pay a free kick if your team takes it 'out of bounds'.

Its been thought of before - i think its even been trialled in preseason games one year?.

Yes, it would tire players quicker.

Yes, it will probably put lumbering, push& shove ruckman like Hodor out of a job, but it might favour the mobile, marking type ruckman to the point where 2 of these type of players are played, just so a mark can be taken to allow a team a moment to "setup'.

Yes, it would take out a historical 'feature' of our game.

But how else do we get the ball back into the centre corridor where it belongs.?

Because if 90% of the match was played there, it'd be a fantastic spectacle ...in comparison to the dour, low scoring struggle that yesterday was.

Yes, it had pressure & intensity, and it takes skill to handle that. It certainly was "hard contest".

But geez, it was very difficult to watch....

I think the new rules have got coaches worried about blow outs, so they're doubling down in field play.

The boundary line is not a bad option, you just need to do it quicker. Not a last resort of safety after you sit back on your haunches waiting for movement in front of you that, inevitably in 8/10 free possession strings, doesn’t happen without a cross or back kick first.

Dumb players and dumb coaches spread out evenly over a wing and then stand still (or around a backline at a kick out). Dumb players and coaches flood their own forward line. Dumb players and coaches kick it slow and high to a forward position where the opposition outnumber your own team and have one or two mcchunkygovern sweepers roaming.

You just need the movement. Movement creates space. The space can be central or wide or in between. Doesn’t matter. But it starts with the movement. Then back yourself in not to lose it once you got it but keep the movement moving.

I think if you introduce a rule that encourages play into the centre of the ground away from the boundaries, then the centre of the ground will get congested, play will get bogged down into a low scoring stoppage game and people will post on here bemoaning the loss of wingers.
I didn't see yesterday's game as I was watching my son play, but I love low scoring, intense, arm wrestle type games. I'd hate for footy to become like basketball where each team seems to take turns at scoring. High scoring doesn't always equate to excitement. Excitement comes from close games, high intensity and high level skills - whether it's 8 goals to 6 or 28 goals to 26.
I'm also perfectly willing to believe that yesterday's game was a steaming pile of effluent.

Yeah chilli, I also prefer a hard low scoring contest to a old style shootout with no pressure.
The out of bounds, last one to touch it free kick would be awful. An oval ball, when left to its own devices, is erratic at best. A free kick, and potential shot at goal is just too much of a penalty. We would get players shepherding the ball over the line, ala soccer. Ugly.
Players are so fit these days, it can get clogged up pretty quickly (yesterday).
Maybe the only answer to a more open, less congested game would be 16 a side, with a 6 4 6 centre bounce configuration. Not to say I would prefer this, but it could be trialled preseason.

I'm pretty sure that the only reason we kept watching that game was because it was our team and we were in with a chance of winning until the last 5-10 mins.

If that had have been a game between two teams we didn't follow I reckon not too many people would have lasted much more than into the second quarter.

Yes Randolph, yesterday's game was the extreme low scoring game which it should not have been. Rain, mud and wind was the usual reason for such a low scoring game...but yesterday was played on a bowling green. When Tucker booted his 55m goal, the conditions seemed perfectly fine.

I prefer to watch a game where the skills of footy are on display, high scoring or medium scoring. Watching 2 sides struggle to put together any sort of skill or system and score 4 goals a half between them would rank alongside having to drink a carton of Southwark in my rating of fun things to do on a Sunday afternoon. But for a couple of shooting star flashes of brilliance from Betts and Walters, it was way worse than the Auskick at half time, as a spectacle.

Given that all their rule “tweaks” have failed in producing higher scores (this year has seen the lowest scoring in recent history) I can see the AwFL double down on the rules and mandate a 6-6-6 formation at every stoppage.
Can you imagine the carnage as players desperately try to exit the forward 50 when there’s a throw in in the pocket?

Cletus, you are spot on the only way to stop Roly is free kick for last touch over the line
Our stock play from a kick out after a point (or for that matter say on the wing) is down the line to a forced contest between our Ruckman and Tabs or Jesse coming up ie force a throw in and hope Mundy or Nat have the brute strength to win the contest and move it forward, that gives our forwards a chance to get back inside F50
Roly can get away with this against the poorer teams but we are now coming against the better ones
Cant see that pies or cats rely on this strategy
Think we can be a good side in the next few yrs if we can get a more modern coach who is not stuck in the 90`s ie a JLO
Also even the commentators have noticed Roly never coaches from the bench ie my opinion he would not want to give up control of the box to his assistants, he has to always be the main man

Bugger changing the rules every year just to try and force a coach to change his tactics. Get tough, ban these bloody ultra defensive, ultra conservative, fundamentalist coaches. Send them to Perth Glory, or the Western Force, who might appreciate their input.

I am all for doing whatever is needed to bring back the one-on-one contests. Bairstow v Matera. Jakovich v Carey. Kenny Hunter v anyone. The sooner we can restrict the swarming of teams around the ball the better a spectacle it will become. Let me rephrase that, the spectacle will be as good as it was in the past.

If we have to go to netball-style zones to achieve that, I will back it.

Zoning and free kicks for last touch to boundary...just won't work.
Zoning more than we are now with this 666 thing will be a stunted "set up" to force openness. Players running back and forth to zones...it will be embarrassingly silly. It will take away the natural flamboyant flow of our game.
Only way to make space with less impact on OUR game is to decrease numbers.
In my opinion.
