Not a fan of Barrett but a good interview with Andrew Krakouer on the AFL website. Offers great insight and well worth the 30 minutes.

I agree, that Fox interview was excellent. Andy is such a nice and obviously intelligent man, clearly remorseful, and proof that people can learn from their mistakes. Great to see him give credit to the Black Ducks too, but mostly his concern for the other guy (Justin Martin) was heartwarming. Owned up to what he'd done, and became a better person.
Also, Neroli Meadows is so good in these types of interviews, and I'm not saying that just because she bleeds purple - although that's a bonus, of course.

That 2010 WAFL GF was as close as I've ever been to a full on stroke - when I saw Kraks' kick sail through the posts at the city end of Subi the whole world went into this shakey grey zone of total delirium. I'll never forget that game, the best game ever played by any footballer anywhere.

I forget, was he one of the ones on the Sudafed?

Pre-sudafed era for sure - pre-alignment with Peel era as well (Mikey amd Clancee were in the 22 on the day); Stevie Coniglio was 16 I think too. Ah, those were the days - that was pure footy.

Andy Kraks was special. Somewhere, a long time ago, I put up a video on YouTube where he kicked a 50m torp off one step hard up on the right forward boundary at Freo Oval - playing with the Black Ducks before his Richmond days. What a footballer.

My Mum loves Freo, but is the type of generous soul who admires the skill of opposition players and will even enjoy a game Freo loses if it means she gets to see a star from the other team at their best. I never really understood that.

But even I was glad to see Krakouer star in that Grand Final, albeit my reaction to his last goal was probably different to Polly's. It was one of the best WAFL GF's I've seen, and given the Monties won the next couple even I can look back positively on the day.

Monty supporters are...well, such generous folk really.

Oh, wait a tick - was I supposed to italicise that?

Not many players would be game enough to attempt the torpedo from the pocket when the team was 92 points down, let alone pull it off.

Although perhaps that's why they were 92 points down.

Not sure but he would have to be Jim's son and I reckon Jimmy taught him the spiral. In a galaxy far, far away I can remember Jimmy practicing not just the torp but the torp pass. It never got more than 6 feet off the ground, went point first at amazing speed and was very straight. Oh it hurt a bit when you marked it. Guess that's why we never saw it in a game!
He was a very gifted footballer and worked extremely hard at his craft.

Awake, you are right about those spiral passes. A lot of the Claremont boys practised it back in the 1980s as a pre-training warm up. I remember standing on the boundary fence down at Claremont Oval in the week before the '81 grand final and all the boys had formed two lines, facing each other to bullet these short passes at their opposite team mate. It was a fun exercise and there was just as much excitement in marking the pass as there was in it coming perfectly off the boot.

That was Ken Hunter's first year at Carlton. He had won the Carlton FC's fairest and best earlier in the week and came back to train with his old team before they took on Souths in that epic grand final.

i. Pffft. I kick those torps all day every day - usually when I’m trying to drop punt 30m down at the park.
ii. It’s a great point seldom made. Much is made of silky skills and magical natural qualities. Not much is made of the sheer hard work, practice and continual commitment to improving skills that these players show as they grow up. As much (probably more) emphasis is placed on the skills (and entertainment and enjoyment) as it is on fitness. Get up the NT sometime - bet you won’t find any kids doing beep tests after school. Go to Melbourne and you’ll find them in the gym. I’m generalising of course but you get the drift.
iii. As a matter of principle I don’t listen to that Barrett bloke - he gives me the irrits. Did listen to Krak on the wireless last night - impressive.
