TOPIC: The Backline

Went to the game and was extremely impressed with how well each of these guys played. Backmen never get the recognition they deserve but Hamling was just about BOG imo. Anyone thinking of dropping Hughes is wrong, Nyhuis played his best game yet, Pearce was his usual consitent self, Ryan rarely plays a bad game and Wilson had his best game for the year.
We haven't had many goals kicked against us all year.
It must be gelling thing.

Yep Randolph, Hamling was magnificent, and,all those guys mentioned were outstanding. The little things impressed me...the tap to advantage, the tackling, spoiling...brilliant.

Corp - started off well, but then it quickly descended into a Hypenesque room of language chaos. Have a cup of tea and a lie down for a bit - pick up the thoughts when you're up/about.

It was good to see Wilson running through the guts to have a ping on goal, and I like the way they got stuck into the sniper when he took a cheap shot on Walters. (The opposition sure know it is open season on Mikey from March to September). The ottther thing I liked was Tabs getting in and letting the Bullies know that they can expect to be pushed back when they dish it out, at 1/4 time. Hope he continues in this vein.

Backline was magnificent, and I agree CA...I reckon Hughes is doing a great job!. And the more games he plays the better he will be.

Also thought Cerra is starting to 'look the part' down their and his skills are more than useful down there.

And yes RM, Wilson played his best game this year, and had a bit of freedom to run. Which was great.!

So, the big questions (barring injury) are:

1) Where does Griffin fit in (or, does he develop into something else)? (Ie a large bodied mid)

2) Where does Hilly (S) fit in - or, hopefully, does he get released back to the wing where he should be?

3) And who is the back up for Pearce & Hambling, should either go down?? If it is Cox, is he playing that position for peel??

On the latest Trends podcast, Hawthorn's 'kill the shark' philosophy of putting pressure on the backine by relentless forwards is discussed. Back when Freo was firing, we had that. When Ballas was fit and uninjured, we had that. I'm seeing some good signs of this happening again with Switkowski, Matera, Walters.

They deserved better today. Were badly let down by the forwards. 50 inside 50s for 9 scoring shots.
