Hypen, I don't consider we have played a good side this year, but even the lesser sides know that when they turn the ball over they can attack through the middle because our players are playing the boundary. If we use the corridor more, from the half back line, it opens up more options for attack, on both sides of a players body. But to do that you have to attack before the opposition get numbers there, not stuff around pointing, waving, and looking for the "best" option.

As for the notion we have more players ahead of the ball than the opposition, this year, the same applies. We haven't played the top sides yet. Also, our players ahead of the footy are too often running away from player with the ball, and running away from the contest, because they are part of the stampede to get numbers to the next contest. When this happens on attack, and we halve the contest in the middle, there is no outside support, when we halve the intercept contest on defense, we lose out because the opposition have the numbers at the contest to open up their forward line.

Our most successful and attractive footy this season (and last year) have been the times when we have turned the footy over and gone straight on the attack, through the middle, with players running outside the contest, not just trying to get into a forward line which doesn't, but should, have players already there providing genuine attacking leads. This kicking to a player running away from the player with the ball gets smashed by good opponents, and we will find that out again against the Cats, the Pies, and the Hawks.

RM, we did a classic attack up the middle on Saturday. Great run out of defence from Wilson, beautiful kick to Tabs about 60m out from goals. Great mark by Tabs. Tabs just has to drop it in front of Hogan (who had disobeyed Roly's instructions and was sitting in the forward 50) and we would have had another goal (or a poster). But Tabs shanks it out wide and we get a boundary throw in.
But realistically, the middle is a dangerous route to go. Opposition players are waiting to pounce on any errant kick, and a mistake often means a goal against you. I love it when we do it well, but oh that sinking feeling when a kick is intercepted.

I would rather die by the sword of attacking the guts, than by the 1000 cuts of a kick to the boundary, throw in, kick to the boundary, throw in ad infinitum. As I said before, the most successful teams attack up the guts. They score goals. The sides that attack the boundary don't score so many goals. So when they play a like minded team, neither side scores many goals, but always 1 side is lucky enough to win. Then they come up against a side that attacks up the guts, and they can't stop them scoring goals. So they lose. Everytime. But it is very risky to attack up the guts.

It seems to me it is a lot more risky not to attack up the guts.

Noticed a couple of photo’s somewhere with Brad Hill and Luke Ryan sharing a genuine laugh after the game.
I’m just not seeing the discontent between the playing group and the coach that some have portrayed.
It would be nice to park the debate about the coach at the moment. There is not enough evidence just now for the pro side and on current form the same applies to the anti side.

I've never been a big Roly fan however notice very few, if any, past players rubbish him so know he is different with them to what we see. Maybe someone has had a word in his ear (Belly perhaps) that fans need to see that interaction more. Roly seems to be changing in a few other ways, eg game style, leaving a few forward (Matera), using youth a bit - I really hope so anyway and I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong about him.

Just judge Lyon on results.....he's been here for 7 years on top dollar and won nothing.....now has to deliver.....a 4 and 2 win ratio is not my Premiership.

I agree, PP, he might buy the boys a powerade after training, deliberately lose at the after training table tennis games, and drive the young fellas home after games. But he does not have a coaching strategy that gets the best out of our team. The latter is what he is paid millions for.

As for the example of him putting Matera deep forward to show he has change his strategies, it fails. He has used Ballas', Walters, and other smalls as the only target up front before, and it has not won us a flag.

While we seem to have made some more positive steps forward compared to last year I think it's too early to be getting carried away about how good we are.
We've beaten one side that you would think are going to make the finals. The rest you doubt will be there.
WB lost to Carlton two weeks ago and we were unconvincing in beating them on the weekend at home. They had the last five or six shots on goal and could have pinched that game if they were more accurate.
A big test this week in Adelaide where our record is poor. We struggled to beat St Kilda at home and they beat them easily away.
Next three games will tell us more about where we stand in the competition. I'm hopeful but not convinced.

When he does go he will be welcomed with open arms at Fox Footy
Always the go to man in the finals when an "expert" was required -would be even better if he had actually won something!

I think most punters on here were hoping for two outcomes: Freo to be awesome, or Freo to be so bad Bell and the Board had no choice but to sack Lyon (which was possible now Lyon only has one and a half years left on his contract). The reality is that we are somewhere on-between, so I can see how that could be dissatisfying.

But if you are agnostic about Lyon, then I think there are some positive signs:

i. Freo has turned over its list reasonably well, and though we’ve skewed slightly towards younger established players than teenagers, despite his reputation Lyon has shown a willingness to play younger players.

ii. Freo’s defence continues to be pretty well organised, and our team defence is still very good.

iii. Freo improved its transition from defence over the last couple of years, which had been a real weakness for Freo and has now become a strength.

iv. Freo is kicking a lot longer, and is even attacking through the middle a little more (at least when we get turnovers).

v. The forward line looks reasonably potent and we almost always have targets forward. Although most would agree we are yet to hit our potential there we look capable of kicking winning scores. The next step will be scoring quickly to put a gap between us and the opposition when we have the balance of play, which is something we’ve always struggled with.

vi. Our midfield is probably our weakness in terms of personnel, but we have done a lot better than I thought given we have been largely without Hodor and Blakely (and I had assumed those guys would be key pillars to our midfield). I think our spread from stoppages has improved a little bit. I still think we’d be stuffed if we lost Fyfe, especially given it would be unfair to expect Mundy to keep playing so well as the season drags on.

vii. We’re reaching the point where we have genuine competition for spots for the first time in ages.

viii. The gap between our best and our worst is reasonably narrow. Certainly we have played badly in some games, but even when we do we have kept ourselves in the game. That suggests to me that the players are invested.

ix. Our fitness looks pretty good. We had a lot of soft tissue injuries coming out of the pre-season, but our players look to be covering the ground well, and have probably looked stronger than their opponents in last quarters. It will be interesting to see how that plays out over the season.

Before the season started I thought the ladder range for Freo was something like 6-12, with a lot needing to go right for Freo to make the finals. What I didn’t anticipate is how even (and random) the competition is. I can see us battling with clubs like Essendon, Brisbane and the Adelaide teams for the last couple of spots on the ladder, and 12 wins could see us sneak in.

I think Freo will wait until the end of the season before making a call on Lyon. At that point it will be a difficult call; most clubs don’t like having a coach coming out of contract. My guess is that if we end up in that 6-10 range Freo will offer a one-year extension. That seems fair to me, but if Lyon pressed for more I’d be inclined to risk losing Lyon than overcommit for that second year. I think if we did get close to making the finals we would be a reasonably attractive team for a young coach looking to make his name.

And this is my point Morgan, it doesn't have to be binary.

I am, have and always will be appalled by Ross Lyon and his values. But he's not going stop me wanting Fremantle to be good. And if the unwanted by-product of us having success and him coaching really well is he keeps his job that is good enough for me.

And it should be good enough for all of you.
