If you could've you should've - reward the tackle. Gornski, turnover.

It is amazing how often players have an inability to release the ball until their numbers are at the contest then miraculously the ball is able to come free. I agree with the concept of prior, I just think it needs to be less generously applied.

Yes DBTS, the Hawks of a few seasons ago were masters of this. Stand in the tackle until it was convenient to allow one of your teammates to take the ball from you.
But the rule as it stands is amusing. You see some guy who is with one arm desperately trying to punch free a ball which his other arm has absolutely no intention of letting go.

There was an incident last weekend, I can't recall the player or even which match it was. A player took possession at halfback and running up to the wing he took a couple of bounces. On the second bounce, the ball did not come straight back up to him - rather it bobbled around a bit so that the player momentarily lost control of it, then regained control. At the point of regaining control, he was tackled. Umpire's Decision: No Prior Opportunity.

At the time I thought: What? His prior opportunity was 70 metres further back when he took possession and decided to go for a gallop. Was the umpire correct to re-set the "No prior opportunity" when the player lost then regained control?

My understanding is he is still deemed to be in possession of the ball. Clearly, umps are being told to let the play go.

I think I heard 7% of tackles are awarded free kicks this season.

I saw that one, and clearly its a free for not disposing of the ball. Fine, give them the chance to regather, but if they are tackled before they regather or after they regather, it should be holding the ball.

I reckon the game would greatly improve as a spectacle if the umps paid a free kick one way or the other on a lot of these decisions, rather than bouncing the bloody footy. We want to see the game flow, and by paying frees, instead of bouncing the ball, players would be forced to play to the rules which would do more to open up the game, free up scoring and provide an exciting spectacle than any 50 of the plethora of rule changes they have foisted on the game in the last 20 years. (including the 6-6-6 rule.).
