For the sake of argument, let’s say that Freo’s improvement isn’t a blip and we’re playing finals in the next few years. How long before we get a jumper change?

Looking around the stadium, there are only a few hold-outs on the old colours, which means everyone has probably got their fill of current Dockers merchandise already. That means merchandise sales have probably plateaued. Sure, they’ve experimented with adding some grey here, or blue there in the polos and hoodies, but as far as jumpers go there really isn’t any reason to buy a new jumper when a 2012 jumper is basically identical to a 2019 jumper.

You can’t really foist a change on members when things are going badly on the field, so you’d likely wait until the worm has turned a bit and everyone is excited about footy again.

My prediction: if Freo makes the finals this year or next, we’ll have a new jumper within a year. My guess is it won’t depart too much from what we have now, but if will be different enough that people will need to buy something new. If I had to guess, it will be something like a black jumper with purple chevrons introduced as a ‘third’ jumper initially - maybe just worn when we have twilight games or something - then when it sells relatively well you’ll see a story about how the players love the tough new black jumper, and it will become our home jumper for the 20201 season. A whole new range of mostly-black-with-purple-trim merchandise replaces the purple gear.

You know it makes sense. Rosich doesn’t have an EFAT to build, the novelty of the stadium will have worn off, he has just had the rush of sitting at the trade table, and is stuck in Cockburn with nothing much to do. You don’t think he won’t find a way to insert himself in some situation? He doesn’t strike me as much of an ideas man, so he’ll have no choice but to go back to an old play in the name of hitting his KPIs.

Hypen's 'I told you so' post (notwithstanding that he actually means Yeti told us so) reminded me to record this for posterity now.

I always wear at least one item with the old logo on, so would welcome a retro round with the old kits if anyone is reading who can make it happen. I need to replenish my dwindling supplies, and there would be plenty of sales from other like-minded people I should imagine. Alternatively, anyone know where old gear is still available?

I'm not a branding expert, but I expect the reason the club was resistant to keeping the old stuff around at the start was that they wanted to establish their all-purple brand for a while. What I don’t understand is why Freo didn’t re-introduce the old jumper as a third ‘clash’ jumper for when Freo was playing a team like Geelong or Collingwood where the white one doesn’t quite do the job of distinguishing the teams – especially in a 25-year anniversary year like this.

Who wouldn’t have loved to have seen Freo run around in the old jumper, even as a one-off game, as part of the anniversary?

It seems like the admin try to be purposefully adversarial with the fanbase at times, and I don’t really understand it.

Interesting thoughts Morgan. I don't think they are deliberately being adversarial but I think they know they stuffed the change process up. They underestimated the support and underlying reasons for that support.

They don't want anything to do with the old cause they know it's not a dead issue and has the capability to rise again. It was a cracking jumper and if fans saw the boys running around in it today they'd go nuts.

Hold-outs? Pfft, Being Anti Steves is not a hold out, it's a middle finger up at the Corp Exe team. I wear my Anchor number 29 with pride along with my old Faithful scarf which has green on it. When we win a premiership I'll put it all in a glass case thingy on the wall and maybe then consider my next move.

I held out with my old gear, but last year had to buy a new top, still wear my old polo underneath.

My team has 4 colours and I hate they took away 2.

The sly/underhand rebranding saga aside, I just think the old badge is way cooler, and a fairly nondescript design replaced it

Yeah, but the new logo looks snazzier on a cap.

The key thing is to stick to boring. The one thing the Steves understood was that creative, clever and different are important things for Freo to avoid. To quote the now totally irrelevant saying, "Nobody every got sacked for buying IBM".

Perhaps our next strip could just be two tones of gray. That is really boring.

Yes, it's crucial that when you're a middle to bottom sports team that you don't do anything that would make you stand out.

A strong logo replaced by Steve's ego (the other one), and to bring it back would be to lose face.
All the wrong reasons there. At heritage round we need to make a pitch for the old jumper.

I just got an email about Freo's official Mundy 300 merchandise - yeegads, Stephen Hill was modelling the men's game day jumper.

I remember when Danyellerin' Pearce modelled all that stuff - my heart sunk when I saw Stephen doing it.

I’m not sure there’s that much of a focus on merchandise. The round 1 “25” jumper was not available at the Optus Oval team store. Reason given: “The club did not tell us to stock it.” Checked in round 3. Told to try Subiaco and Cockburn stores. Not available at Subi and now that store has closed. Cockburn is too far away. Obviously the powers at be decided trying to sell the “25” was not viable.

No need to speculate, Jebediah will let us know when the new jumper is ready.
