To me that goal to win against Richmond at the G featuring at the end of the highlights video Bizkit posted is the quintessential Dave Mundy moment. And what made it so special for us long suffering Melbourne-based Freo fans, compared to his equally brilliant sealer at the G against the Tiges with 50 seconds to go the previous year (or maybe the one before that?), was that this time he was kicking to the city end of the G where we Freo fans usually sit.
The sheer joy of the moment: 10 seconds to go. Sandi tap to Neale, Neale kick to Dave. Mark. Siren. Dave striding in for the kick, cool as a slightly dishevelled cucumber. Goal. The screaming of the Freo fans. The shattering of forty thousand Tiges fans' hearts. It will always be one of my most cherished footy memories, and its all the more special to me because in the video you can clearly see me, my wife and my two boys going absolutely nuts behind the goals as the ball sails through (along with everyone else in purple).
We truly have been blessed to have Mundy, one of the most understated, loyal, talented, true champions in the history of the game, wearing the purple for 299 games.
I'm just not sure how to put all that into song Jordo, but I now sure am feeling some man-love for the #16…
