We all seem to agree on the improvement of Matera this year but another one who regularly cops some unwarranted criticism imo is Hughes. Thought he was really solid tonight and used the ball well. He seems to know his role in the backline and is fitting in down there.
Also Tucker. Playing steadily without being spectacular. Does he get a tagging role? If so, who was he on today?

Yeah, both those players play the game as it presents itself. They don't seem to be looking to play "patterns", they just try and get the ball forward and to advantage. With options forward this week, both looked more effective.

I also thought that Tabs showed he is a better option than Cox at half forward at the moment. While Cox did not miss a shot on goal, I do not think he did much else.

Whilst on the topic of 'escaped goats', One or two on here have mentioned Conca as not doing too well yet but I'm wondering if he is playing the part Rowan Jones and then Fletcher played for the egls when they had a dominant midfield, ie making the way clear for the likes of Fyfe, Mundy etc. any thoughts?

I don't know about Conca. In most teams there are one or two players where it looks like they aren't doing much, but their teammates and the coach swear they are important to the team. Conca could be one of those guys, and I hope he is because he does seem to gift the ball to the opposition a bit. '

I've been hard on Hughes but he was good today. I think he's destined to be a fringe player - he might end up making way for Logue if he can actually play - but if a player of Hughes' calibre is on the fringe it means your defence is in good shape.

I thought bringing in Conca as a free agent was a bit of a strange decision after recent delistings like Mzungu, Barlow and De Boer. I can’t see how he adds more to the side than any of these players especially De Boer. He seems to be given roles in the midfield at the moment which quiet easily could of been De Boers job at a much cheaper rate.

Matera has played well the last few weeks for somebody we’ve had to invest very little in. I saw him setup in the midfield way to much last year, he won’t cut it in there.
Like all small forwards they will have weeks without much impact. His impact will be much better if the bigs continue to mark and at least halve contests.

Bozza, when you are really bottoming out it's very hard to keep your admirable role-players on your list, because realistically you want to have a look at a bunch of younger players, meaning guys like de Boer probably weren't going to play much in 2017 and 2018. It's ok if they are young enough to be around for the next upswing, but MdB is 29, and so it was no guarantee he was going to be around for our next finals tilt.

Conca is only 3 years younger, but that's an important three years if our best years are going to be in the 2020-2023 range.

Hughes’ decision making is a bit sus. This might improve with experience but he doesn’t naturally pick the best of two or three options and execute.

He’s certainly going hard at it right now. Deserves his spot in the A team.

Freo have a few in this category, which can go south pretty quickly under space-closing pressure of the top teams. This makes it important to get that structure and positional setup right to make those options obvious and have the effort create numbers to help each other out rather than effort simply chasing tail.
