TOPIC: Taberner

Here’s a indisputable and possibly meaningless stats.
There have been over 280 different goal kickers in the AGL this year. Tabs currently sits 12th in that list for most goals!

Of the 480 players that have taken a mark this year Tsbs is 6th.

Of the 270 odd players that have taken marks inside 50, he sits 4th

Of the 311 players that have taken contested marks he sits 2nd

Of the 411 players that have committed a clanger he sits 74.

What does all that mean? I have no idea but someone should be able to use that info to support their point of view.

There is more of a reason to think he will become a brilliant player rather than an average player.

Average players don’t string together the 5 games he has so far in 2019.

I realise some people will look back a few years when he was still finding his feet but it doesn’t make much sense to form an opinion based on how he was playing 2 or 3 years ago. Look at how he has been playing this season and then form an opinion. He has either dominated or been on the cusp of it for 4 out of 5 games.

So far 10 goals from 5 games so he’s on track to kick 40+

His other statistics including marks and disposals are impressive and the immeasurable things like the way he works and competes are looking elite.

No reason to think why he couldn’t continue to be seriously good this year and our most important forward for the next 5 years. I see no good reason to think Hogan will be a superior player at this stage.

To say Darling is a better player than Taberner, Quasi, you have to be missing some meds. If Darling was not a front running poser who crumbles under pressure, he may be a fairly reasonable player, but he is, so he is not. Tabs leaves him for dead in every aspect of the game.

Those stats are pretty impressive WTB, and show he is a dominant force in our forward line.

I think they will have to find room for Brennan Cox , he is going to be a very god player also !

Ross Lyon has his faults, but one of his strengths seems to be getting as much from players as they are capable of. His impact (and legacy) at Freo will be seen in a number of ways, but noteworthy, I think, will be his undoubted talent for coaxing the best out of those players that have the ability within them, but, for one reason or another, struggle to fully realise their true potential. The best example, maybe, is Michael Walters. Look how he's come on. Tabs is another. A team player who always showed enough glimpses of awesome ability, but was frustratingly inconsistent. Not now, though. Now he's a champ, and we're all happy to say " told you so".

I imagine learning your craft as a key forward must be pretty difficult in a Ross Lyon coached team.

I remember Ross saying there’s more to being a forward than kicking goals. Tabs obviously took his advice and makes sure he bangs a few through for a point.

Tabs is a lot like Matthew Richardson. A tall man, could play up the ground, took 10 marks a game, was the team's focal point.

Richardson kicked 800 goals from 282 games, which is #12 all time. Who knows how many he would have got if he'd actually kicked straight?

At least there's nothing to fault about Taberner's attitude. AFAICT, he is a team player and never loses his rag.

But if Freo can get the same output out of Tabs and he kicks more goals than behinds, we'll have 5+ years of high scoring.

Well...I'm with you Morgan (&the few others on this). This talk of "Tabs the Champion" is getting a bit overblown.

Yes, he has undoubtedly improved.

Yes, he is undoubtedly a pivotal player for this year, and, the next few to come.

Yes, we have persevered with him and it looks like its starting to play off. It'll be a great rookie pick if it does!

And, yes, I really do hope he is the player that we have always hoped he will be.Nothing would make me happier.

But lets just simmer down a bit and let the poor bloke string a few good games together - a thing that he has NEVER done - before we start labelling him as "The Second Coming".

He won't win a Coleman because of our multi-pronged attack, -and if he did - it would mean the complete failure of said multi-pronged attack.

If he starts putting consecutive 5 goal bags together, I'll get a tad more excited.

But don't think that oppositions won't be paying him a bit more attention from now on.

Up till now, he probably hasn't been reliable or proficient enough to worry them too much.

And, now, he's got the pressure of expectation upon him - judging by afore-mentioned comments and recent media guff.
