Our illustrious coach has solved our key forward dilemmas - Move Hogan to fullback! Yep after all these years of trying to lure a big forward to Freo we finally succeeded and whats the strategy of Lyon - move him to the backline! What hope do we have, this has to be the last straw.

It’s a pretty long bow for a criticism of Lyon.

As I read this, if Hamling isn’t fit, and given the absence of Logue and Kersten, if Freo elects not to play either Cox or Nyhuis in the backline or they struggle, we shouldn’t play Hogan back because for years (but not this year) we didn’t have any forwards?

Teams need to be flexible. We’re a bit short in the backline, and we’ve got a bit of tall cover in the forward line. Maybe, as Lyon suggests, Cox or Nyhuis could do a job down there, but if they aren't getting the job done you’d be mad not to consider giving Hogan a crack.

Nah Morgan, a bloke like Hogan shouldn't be moved to full back. He's a match winner and throwing him on a Cameron or Finlayson in a shut down role is a complete waste of his talent. He is a forward with great instincts and athletic ability, even the suggestion of playing him back is idiocy.

You would never have considered Pav back after he established himself as a forward, the idea is ridiculous.

We give up two, count 'em two top draft picks to get a goal kicking forward and then the bloke who is coaching better than ever wants to play him as a key defender.

I remember the world's greatest coach doing that with Tabs and Cox last year and we got thrashed. of course the
'nobody but roly' crowd have started to defend this monumental piece of stupidity in exactly the same way they defended playing the same bloke in the midfield. As a result, apart from the first game where we played against witches hats, we have failed to kick 10 goals since.

If Hogan is playing as a key defender, it limits the available talent in the forward line to attempt to kick a competitive score. Can we expect another 1 goal half of football again?

To all those who stated that the game plan had become more attacking and that roly would not revert to type, guess what? Roly has reverted to type. He has yet to learn that you cannot kick a competitive score with no established forward line

I just don't understand. It's only taken 4 rounds of the season for optimism to vanish and the Dockers to go from well-balanced squad, threatening forward line, well-organised defence etc. to seeing Lobb become the new, permanent ruck and Hogan an emerging full back. Why are Freo the permanent crisis club?

I don’t think it’s optimal Bizkit, but if the GWS forwards are getting off the leash on our makeshift backline and swinging the game, I don’t see any harm in trying Hogan back for a spell. I’m assuming we’ll pick Hodor to help battle Mumford, which means we’ll still have Tabs, Lobb, Cox (if he’s picked) and McCarthy as options forward.

It’s no different to West Coast moving McGovern forward for bursts when Kennedy was injured last year. They were prepared to give up the best marking defender in the league to play as an average forward, because sometimes team balance requires it.

All that said, if Lyon plays Hogan in defence on Saturday, and it doesn’t work, then if people want to bag Lyon for doing so that’s their prerogative. But at the moment it’s the Minority Report version of coach bagging.

But yeti, I’m curious what you mean by the ‘nobody but Roly crowd’. Could I please trouble you to explain what you mean by that?
