Let Taberner play on McGovern, and cut his intercept marking out of his game, and we win that contest because the ball comes to ground for our goalsneaks. Give Hogan license to direct the inside 50 traffic and let him play as a pure full forward. We need to kick goals, and that is why we recruited Hogan. A bag of 5 or 6 goals will see his confidence rise and will also give the rest of the team confidence in their disposal by foot into the 50. (an area which is sadly lacking at the moment.)

Last week someone commented on Materas skill in kicking the footy to a player running away from him into the goalsquare. And then commented it is the hardest skill in footy, kicking to a teammate leading away from the kicker. How about changing things a bit so we can master some of the easier skills, like kicking to a full- forward leading at you, handpassing in front of a running teammate and the like before we attempt the most difficult skills.

Hogan isn't Tony Lockett. Playing him at full forward takes away his biggest asset, his run and agility for someone his size. He is a lead up player who works his ass off all day and has a big body and you should expect to see him working through the middle most of the time.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Playing him at full forward, Biz, allows him to use his abilities within range of goal, and providing a target for the likes of Hill, Wilson, Ryan, Mundy and co as they stream through the center square in full out attack mode. But I guess we will never see that. Wilson, another who was recruited for a specific skill, the ability to pass the footy accurately by foot over 60 meters, into the 50, has had all opportunities to use that skill taken away since he moved to Freo. We may as well have recruited the drovers dog.

I agree with that Bizkit.

So tell me again why we needed him so much and were happy to trade away the first two top ten picks.

Banfield was a good tagger last year but it appears Tucker had this job now.

You have the wrong idea about Hogan RM, that's a Tab/Lobb role where you sit there in packs and try and mark. he's never played the role you're describing and it doesn't work to his best attributes when he is forced to sit under high balls against big defenders.

At Melbourne Hogan was played as the lead up forward who worked through half forward and the wing. He picked up a tonne of marks on smaller opponents pushing up the ground before his fantastic decision making and skills shone delivering it inside 50m. T McDonald was the stay at home forward who benefit most from Jesse's work, often drawing mismatches as defenders tried to swap between the two as Hogan delivered forward then ran in with speed to present an option.

You can see in the way Melbourne and McDonald play without him that they're missing that role a great deal. If you have the perception of Hogan as a big bustling full forward, that's your choice but it's not the reality or how he's going to play.

My understanding is we turned our backs on a once in a lifetime draft to get key fwds. To get Hogan.

Don't bloody tell me Hogan is not that player. Are you aware of what we have turned our backs on?

Biz, stop look and read. I never said he is the stand in the pack and mark type of full forward. I would like to see him played the way Modra played full forward, and Dunstall. They used there pace and marking to contest one on one or free of opposition, and did it all within the 50. Tell me again, why Hogan can not play this role, but can handle the job of being a big bodied midfielder. You are just buying into Lyon's flawed game plan of having no targets inside 50 when we get the ball, but having them all chase the ball in. It has not worked for the last 4 years and will never work.

Hypen, I know very well what we turned our backs on giving away draft picks!

Sure, wind back time 20 years and that's a possibility RM. No team plays like that now and no forward has much space or room to move. There's a reason there's no big forwards kicking big bags week in and week out, teams congest forwardlines and there's no room to move unless you catch a team on a fast break which generally requires fast forwards running towards goal.

The situation you describe doesn't really exist anymore, the reality is you need a big marking forward to sit close to goals and contest in packs, bringing the ball to ground. Hogan isn't that player which isn't to say he can't perform that role. He is far more impactful as the lead up running forward who outmuscles everyone and uses his superior athletic ability, skills and smarts to win the ball and get it into danger positions, following up and dragging the team along with him.

Hoges can roost 'em from well outside of the 50 - with ease. He's our guy, way better than any of those Walsh, Precosius and Rankine kids - I reckon they don't even go to the pub let alone a kegger.

Biz you had better go have a quiet word with Jeremy Cameron and let him know that. His non conforming attitude this year is very disturbing

Yeah, Biz, no team plays like that anymore. If we got the footy into our forward 50 quickly, with the likes of Hogan and Cammac leading into the space that will be there, every team in the comp would be looking for a Modra to spearhead their attack. Just because everyone else is doing it, is not an excuse to be dumb. As your mother probably said to you at some stage "If everyone else was putting their head in the fire , would you?".
