TOPIC: Skills v Effort

If ever you had to see two more opposite games it was last night versus today. I don't know about St Kilda'a focus but i do know that ours is all about effort and skills will apparently come by magic, whereas last night both coaches have stated how important skills training is.
We look miles off the pace again.

I have a theory about the numerous out on the full kicked. Sure, some of them were G-grade amateur level mistakes but I sit near the fence on the outer side and there is at least 4 metres of real grass after the boundary line before it changes to a further 4 metres of astroturf.

I think the players kicked as if the grass/astroturf line was the real boundary line. Which explains why many passes like McCarthy's in the 2nd quarter went O.O.B.

For those blaming the coach for the rudimentary skill errors of professional AFL players, is this a uniquely AFL thing, or in addition to saying ‘Bloody Lyon’ when Brayshaw kicks it repeatedly out of bounds, do you also say ‘Bloody Langer’ when a Marsh holds out, and ‘Bloody Gleeson’ when Damian Martin bricks a shot?

I’ve always seen skills as largely within the realms of a player’s agency, but it seems I’m in the minority. I’m just wondering whether it is a uniquely AFL thing.

I know you constantly defend Lyon, Morgan but when we have obvious skills deficiencies and the coach repeatedly states he 'doesn't train skills' added to a concentration on structures and running at training, then yes, anyone with a brain would say 'bloody Lyon'.

In a situation where we almost always lose to better skilled teams and there is a constant refusal to address that situation due to a policy by the head coach, why should he not be held accountable for his failures? He's not being paid to do that.

Were the skills shown in Rd one an aberration or was that a skills week?

Well if we look at one player in particular in Brayshaw, you would be hoping we paid due diligence when we recruited him, but his kicking skills are dreadful. Were they that bad previously, is his confidence down or what?
It seems obvious that someone needs to take him aside and concentrate on improving those skills, otherwise he will be a wasted early pick.

I'll have a go Morgan.

If Langer was not having net sessions in favour of say fielding practice - ground fielding (no slips, too attacking) on the premise that preventing your opponent scoring was the way to win games. Then yes we'd climb into him.

But on the assumption he values skills training then no.

The rebuilding is just about finished......it depends on the standards you set yourself on and that was bloody awful

I just think blaming the coach for professional players making amateur skill errors let’s them off the hook. McCarthy was great by foot for two weeks, and an abomination today. I think that speaks more to CamMac than Lyon. B Hill had had 8 seasons in the AFL to learn how to hit a target and muffed everything today, yet in our last two weeks has been among our best.

That’s not a ‘training skills’ thing. Perhaps it’s some other preparation issue which is Lyon’s fault, but trotting out talking points from Mark Duffield’s article from last season doesn’t explain how payets who legitimately should (and do) have skills don’t execute from time to time.

I'll have another go. So we've already made the point prioritising effort over skill.

Here's another, in order to avoid Saint Kilda's midfield flood go through it with run and quick handball and have your forwards on the other side. They'll soon cease it. Watch Hawthorn and Geelong play St Kilda.

Don't hug the boundary trying to go around it. It makes it hard and is a recipe for disaster.

If skilled players become duds/lose confidence/look lost when they join Freo - and many have - why do you think that is?
