TOPIC: If it looks like a duck

WTB,

in fairness to the current head of the AFL, he certainly hasn't demonstrated he has much of an idea about any part of the game, so his comments could in fact be correct.

On second thoughts, it could be part of his stand up routine for AFL Xmas parties.

"I have no idea what tanking is but Melbourne didn't do it'. Haha That'll put 'em in the aisles

Well, I do Shane, putting a 2 miler in a 6 or 7 furlong race, to get it fit for the 2 mile race is a little bit different to putting "Handbrake Harry " on a horse to make sure it doesn't win. The punters, in the first example , should be able to recognise that the 2 mile horse is unlikely to win over a sprint distance, but in the second example, unless they know "Handbrake Harry" and his abilities, they are going to have a bet.

The thing is though, everyone involved at Melbourne claims they didn't take any action to tank. Bailey said he felt under pressure to do it, he denied he did it.

If there's no evidence of tanking and resting players is not only not classified as tanking, it's considered a legitimate tactic, what more could the AFL could have done?

Bailey and Connolly got similar treatment to Hird and Thompson. Melbourne were fined half a million dollars. The book was thrown at them.

I propose a couple of solutions:

1. Teams finishing 13th-16th on the ladder play off in some kind of mini series to determine the order of the top 4 draft picks. The 17th and 18th places teams don’t participate in this and automatically get picks 5 and 6 respectively. So there would be big incentive to try and finish between 13th-16th rather than 17th or 18th. Teams finishing 9th-12th could also battle it out in something similar. Higher position is rewarded with home games for the mini series. Fans are happy because it can add some excitement at the end of the year and the AFL gets to broadcast a few more games.

2. For teams confirmed to finish in the top eight by the last two rounds of the season they must select a side that has played a combined average number of a certain number of games for the season for the last two rounds. I imagine this number would need to be around 18-20 or so to stop sides resting too many players. If a team feels they are unable to do this they would have to submit a case to the AFL for review. This may not eliminate resting one or two players but at least it would prevent resting half a side.

I think we are coming up with solutions for a problem that doesn't have to be solved.

Melbourne might have tanked, the AFL fined them and suspended two people. It's done and dusted.

If allegations come up in the future punish tge club involved but there is no need for convoluted solutions where clubs are at the bottom because they are genuinely crap.

As for sports betting, well that's at the punters own risk.

It doesn’t seem to me that tanking works anyway so I reckon clubs have abandoned it.
Both Carlton and Melbourne remained in the doldrums while these accusations circulated. Skully and Trengove are no longer at the club.
I myself am sceptical about who is beating these drums. I remember McGuire being quite vocal in his criticism, he seems quite happy with how free agency is working.
There are many other factors that play into advantage in building a list, such as premiership contention that could arguably be impacted by tanking. I can only imagine it is harder to attract a player after a four win season.
I didn’t mind the priority pick and like the attempt to balance out with the draft. I don’t like to see clubs struggling at the bottom of the ladder,
I am more interested in addressing the reasons behind why the draft doesn’t seem to be effective in achieving its aim.

The hand wringing over this is not worth the effort.

The comp is already more heavily rigged by a governing body that has provided ongoing concessions/incentives/draft plundering for chosen clubs, based on a business model of market growth.

The draw is rigged for the same economic reasons. Fixtures are chosen to favour clubs that can draw a crowd regardless of how crap they are doing.

And you wonder why they could care less whether Melbourne cheated because they were crap?

The AFL cheat better, harder and for longer.
