It's a problem in the AFL and I know I bang on about it all the time but too many footballers aren't playing football. They're just carrying out instructions from ex-footballers.

You look at Fremantle on the weekend and the way they played out the game. No one did anything new, or took a risk or showed any sort of desire to break through with a match winning bit of play. They stuck to the plan. They kept doing the same thing they'd been doing unsuccessfully all day until the clock ran down.

Fremantle play like they come up with a plan on a Wednesday afternoon and lock it in. No deviation from that plan because it's not a game it's a process.

The teams that play winning football move the ball instinctively, the players calling for the ball as they make space do it instinctively.

Essendon look like a team focussed on a sub-set of KPIs, one of them being timely rotations.

Looked to be over coached was exactly what I thought and immediately thought of Fremantle.
How refreshing was Hinkley’s response last week after a round one win. Genuine excitement and willingness to express this. There was no keeping a lid on it and managing the message.

Any non-retarded coach would tell a player to stand the mark - only an idiot would bugger off to the bench and not bother. That was a telling video that exemplified precisely what Shane was saying.

The sad thing with process footy is that anyone would think it was worth watching - isn't that what the whole point of the game is?
