TOPIC: Midfield Concerns

I think you should question your sources there freolifer. Fyfe received coaches votes from that game and had nothing to do with why we lost or how we played. He did everything he could to drag us over the line and anyone having a go at him for that performance is an idiot.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Lyon would be too professional to be a bit narky about Fyfe's comment after the North Melbourne game, so I'm sure it was measured and constructive criticism.

For what it's worth, I thought Hogan looked pretty good in the middle in the last quarter when we couldn't get it past halfway. There's no point him standing in the forward line doing nothing when we already had Tabs and McCarthy standing up there doing nothing in those circumstances.

Morgan, for what it is worth, Hogan not being forward is probably a big reason why we could not kick goals in the last quarter.

Would you hire an open heart surgeon, and then ask him to mow your lawns and weed your garden??? I mean, Hogan does play OK in the middle, but we chased him as a goalkicking forward. A position we have been sadly lacking in for 4 or so years now. We have a plethora of mids who can get the footy forward, but they then have to stop and kick sideways or backwards until our forwards get forward. What part of that don't you "true believers" see.

If we had a plethora of mids who could get the ball forward on Sunday we would have won. We had Fyfe and a bunch of bystanders.

The heart surgeon analogy isn’t a good one. It doesn’t say “forward” on Hogan’s employment contract (although perhaps it does in Lobb’s case). We play him where he can be of best service. I think he’s best used 60% high half forward, 20% deep in the forward line, and 20% in the midfield when we need a big body in there. I thought we really needed help getting the ball out of defence on Sunday, and a couple of times he was both a really good target getting out, and useful with the ball on the ground. He seemed to have a bit of poise where we were lacking that a bit. Sure, you’d love that forward as well, but in the circumstances where you’ve still got Lobb, Tabs, McCarthy and Walters to kick to, having Hogan up the ground is a decent trade off.

It's no different to what we’ve been doing with Walters for years, or in reverse with Fyfe going forward sometimes. I don’t understand why people get so riled up about it.

Ive always felt this team is still a work in progress. We need quality mids more than we needed Hogan. But Hogan was gettable and you have to act given how dam rare good key forwards are. They'll trade out Tabs or Cox at the end of the season for a second pick, well have an early first pick and we'll address these midfield issues.

We need another year at the draft. Sorry guys but these things take time.

If you line up the Dockers midfield against almost any other team, particularly Collingwood , Geelong, Adelaide and Port, it is painfully obvious that the Dockers are mediocre. Fyfe and B Hill are good enough. Blakely and Langdon may become so. S Hill is a question mark. Walters is a forward. The young players need to improve a lot although this will take years for those who stay .

Without an A grade midfield a team will always languish in the bottom eight.

Whatever you think of the Dockers coaching staff, while a coach can diminish a good player it is near impossible to coach an ordinary player into becoming an A grader.

So now that the forward line is sorted they can start on the midfield.

Morgan Gold Coast hardly have a “plethora of mids” at their disposal. We got ahead of ourselves.

That’s what I meant by bystanders. All I’m saying is if the regular mids aren’t getting it done, I don’t see any harm in whacking Hogan in there for a spell the way we used to with Pav.

If I was a GC midfielder having my way with guys like Tucker, Colyer and Brayshaw, I’d probably rather things stay as they were than have to deal with someone 15 kg bigger than me being added to the mix.

It mixed things up a bit when he went in there.

The frustration being that they used him better in the midfield than they did in the forward line. Everything is about the second effort in the forward line, locking it in, bringing the ball to ground.

Rather putting putting the focus ongetting the ball into the fifty with the sole intent of scoring from that, there are two distinct steps. Get inside 50/Regroup and set up a scoring formation.

It should be seamless.

Do it once. Do it right.

Hogan really is a talent. He's close to six foot six and he's running around as a rover.

I remember watching Michael and Boucher ruck in the early eighties, both were six foot two.

Hypen, I used to work with Ron Boucher (admittedly a great many years ago) and I measured in at 5 foot sixteen and from what I remember, he stood over me. (Not to mention he was significantly bigger in most departments and somewhat stronger as well)

Decent enough guy off the field but I certainly wouldn't entertain annoying him on the field. Doing that could win you a Darwin Award (posthumous of course)

Oh and Stephen Michael was just a gem. The only thing wrong with his game was that rotten guernsey they made him wear. He would have looked much better in blue and white

Well...if tbe midfield is the root of all our problems, then why is our only 'remedy' to get a big power forward to run through there. ?

Surely, we have spent our summer developing players capable of playing in the middle?
It seems we are just waiting for Blakely , and Hilly, to return - the former to be in there, and Hilly frees up someone else to go in there.
We have numerous young potential midfielders who could be rotated through there to give them the vital match experience they need.

But, instead, we are leaving Brayshaw in there for a whole match - and he's not a dominate player at this stage in his development; we leave Cerra in the backline all game even though he is perhaps our most gifted young player; and, we leave a fellow like Tom North with Peel. Crowden was recruited as a skillful in & under player, but hes also in the 2's. And Bailey Banfield has skilld and shows them when hes let off the leash. But, he seems destined to be a 'role player/tagging type' under the current coach.

I wouldnt mind our midfield getting belted if it had a few young blokes in there - it has the future in mind.

Its a different story when its struggling with a couple of recycled players in there.

How much would young Cerra learn if hes in there with Fyfe & Mundy, with Brad Hill running past. Instead, his current ' best spot' is on a back flank.

And geez, get Tom North in there and lets see what he has got.
