When I watch the Pies I always keep an eye out for Mayne. I'm torn between wanting the Pies to lose, and wanting Mayne to win.

He has become the grand master of the one percenters. Plus working within his limitations - short kicking + short handball game is what he does now.

I spoke a lot with Chris when he was first drafted; years later I had a chat with his Grandpa (who just happened to be in front of me in the queue for a burger at Basso one Saturday). Quality young bloke, good family.

I must admit also that he resolved my set shot kicking way back when he was a dead certainty for a goal anywhere inside the forward 49. He used to have this column in the Docker mag - a kid's corner thing - and once he provided a link for the little tackers to help them with their set shot kicking routine. It was a great video, about 8 minutes long, that went through everything he did for a shot on goal. I decided to give it a go - I got the old Burley out and went down to a local park to have a few kicks at the sticks. I followed Chris' advice to the letter and it worked like a damn - every kick went straight through the middle. Sure, no pressure - I mean it wasn't going to help me supervise postgrads or anything - but it was the best straightforward advice I had ever received on kicking for goal.

There you go - history has shown that his routine let Chris down for a spell, but it still works for me. Im not sure if the video is around anymore, but if i find it I'll post up a link.

Interesting Polly. Did it work for droppies & torps? Personally, I preferred the flat punt, but when I mention it, nobody knows what I'm talking about.

Drop kicks only - torps are what I grew up kicking all the time, grid iron football kicks. So when I came here all my kicking - short passes, whatever - were torpedoes. No one liked playing with me in their side, especially my kids (who ended up fishing the errant balls out of trees, neighbour yards, etc.). Flat punts were my plan b in the field - top of the foot, belly of the ball.

I had a few kicks one night at Peel's home ground in Mandurah (after a Nicky Winmar carnival) with Gover - a mate that used to be on Dockerland. He was a fantastic kick on the run.

And to think, Mandurah used to be in the SFFC zone.

I doubt there was a more beautiful kick than than the Torpy stab pass. Not many could pull it off. The bog standard droppy stab pass was also something to behold. Should never have gone out of the game. Can you imagine a Melrose or Hollins screaming out of the middle and hitting a leading Hogan on the tit 25 out. My God, I feel a stirring in the loins just thinking about it. I digress. What I meant to say, and it has nothing to do with Chris Mayne, is that Josh Carr is the man to lead us to a premiership. I've banged on about this a few times, I know. But I'm right.

Josh Carr at Freo would be very popular. Tickertape parade even, upon his arrival.

And he can coach. He hates the Slappers, was good against them, they hate him. What more could you want, besides his brother as an assistant. You know I'm right!

That's what inspired my post, Suker. Just watched everything I could find. 2004 GF V Jonathon Brown is pretty good again. He was good, as was his brother.

Stacks, you would not have thought the stab-torp pass a thing of beauty if you played full forward against a full back who insisted on using it on kickouts straight down the guts.
