Bizkit, as a rule of thumb you put a 21 year old up against a 26 year old, and the older guy wins. There is oodles of room for improvement in a 21 year old. Being young is a good thing about Brisbane, and its a good thing about us.

With the AFL restriction on runners, more experienced players will have a bigger advantage, as they'll be able to react to changes on field without the coach telling them what to do.

We had a good mix of youth and experience out there, but we can still expect some thumpings because we will have too many young players out there.

We are not that young Rogerrocks every team will tell you they are playing the kids. It's just part of the team's composition these days. I'd say we are a pretty mature team relatively speaking. The backline and midfield has played a lot of football.

You blokes are missing the point and derailing the intended direction of the thread.

I shouldn't have to explain this but it seems that I do.

You are supposed to be saying isn't Roly doing a wonderful job of developing the kids and how much better would we do if he got another contract extension. It's not good bringing in facts like a 21 year old has been in the AFL system for 3 - 4 years and has somewhere between 50 - 100 games. It only works if you ignore all that and pretend they are still raw recruits.

Get with the program people.

I don't reckon Yeti. Roly still has his career on the line, and it will be based on what happens this season. And even I will be screaming if he gets a 5 year deal. From here on in he should live with the same uncertainty that players live with.

Of course there is the risk of him being poached if we do that - but I assume that would have some here jumping for joy, so maybe the club should play hardball with him.

He's back with a good bit of Rolyism. In case you were thinking about it, apparently " we are not falling into the bouquets"

That's lucky. I was concerned he'd get more complacent.

RR, a very good 21 yo will beat a good 26 year old. Your argument is an example of what you accuse the anti-Lyon cabal of. Generalisations and assumptions, used to back up your opinion of what is happening at Freo. A 21 yo should be regarded as a key player in the team, if he is going to be a long term player for the club. Our "kids" are the 18 and 19yo players, of whom we had 2, I would guess that would be on a par with most other teams in the comp.

Lyon still has to prove that he won't go back to his ultra defensive game plan when we come up against the top sides. This time of year in the last 3 seasons, we have thought that things have changed, only to be gutted when we fail to attack the flag contenders.

I'm sure you remember last year when we were playing way more than 2 new players. Anyway Norfs were rubbish in their first game and away from home. This week it is just as important that we play well.

I have a feeling that if Lyon wanted to revert back to a bygone ultra defensive style, to what, save some games, limit the damage maybe...I reckon a player revolt would be on the cards, or at minimum a stern pushback from the leadership group and Belly. Belly looked very keen to hear what coaches are saying and doing at the short breaks.
I don't reckon Lyon would be so foolish to abandon the "modernisation" of the game plan. Not to mention the supporters' anger at such a notion.

Yeti I’m not trying to say Lyon is doing a great job of developing the kids and should get an extension. I’m saying his put two clubs in a mess by not playing younger guys while the teams were winning. We’ve put a lot of games into kids in the last couple years to fast track them because we had no other option. I hope he doesn’t fall into the same trap. I still want to see Dixon, North, Bewley, Valente and Sturt get some games this year. There was a lot of preseason talk about North playing on ball and then doesn’t feature in any of the JLT games. As much as I love Ballas maybe it’s time someone else gets a run.

My point exactly Larkin, it was easy for Lyon to just let the players take control on Sunday, but on past experience, as soon as an opponent fights back, and before they have taken control of the game, Lyon goes ultra defensive. He has no concept of the "attack is the best form of defense" game plan.

Not defending anything but how did those players classed as not young, because they have a good base of football get that experience if they didn’t play when they were young?

I was classing them as not young because they are 23. Cam McCarthy was in a list that was expressing how it was great we were playing the kids. If you start at 18 and you're on the way out at 28, then 23 is the middle of your career.

I think you have to look at the claim being made rather than cobbling together the various replies to it as if it was one argument. Having said that, I have no idea what Rogerrock's argument is anyway.
