TOPIC: Ross Lyon

Yes, we didn't recruit as well as we could. And we didn't use the talent we had well enough, and then we let them go.

So Sutcliffe and Sheridan were players who weren't quite good enough (and Sutcliffe was used out of position a lot). Morabito and Pitt were just bad luck. Zac Clark was maybe poor management. De Boer and Barlow were wasted and then let go.

Add to that list:
Apeness, first round pick who was always injured and never really looked like making it at the top level.
Crozier, end of first round compo pick who we kept trying to turn into a half forward when he always looked more comfortable at half back (still does at the dogs)
Foster, who you ask, that’s right he was a second rounder that never looked like getting a look in, thankfully they picked Neale to help him with the homesickness so that kinda worked out.
Our drafting and then management of these players really was appalling.

Josh Simpson-1st round pick, Tanner Smith, Max Duffy-all were taken inside top 40 in 2012 draft

Viv Michie, Jack Anthony-2010

Harley Balic-2015

Colin Sylvia- 201?

Been doing a lot better recently though.

I am absolutely convinced that none of your jokers has ever gotten advice from a real Kung Fu master.

If you had, you'd get advice like this...

Egurls Suck!

We only had a few kids playing on the weekend, most of those guys were mature aged and experienced. Even Schultz is 21 turning 22 this year.

That was not a young team out there on the weekend, it was a mature team who should be pretty close to their prime for the most part.

Our other additions were Colyer (27 turning 28), Conca (26 turning 27) and Lobb (26). RL hasn't turned to the kids and would be unlikely to do so with changes like Matera or Hogan.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

In fact, we smashed a team whose players were, on average, 8 months older than ours, and who collectively had an entire season of experience on us. While my strong view is that it is almost totally irrelevant, our side on the weekend was younger and less experienced than two-thirds of the competition.

8 months different. So they're all in the same school year. Those average age stats aren't almost totally irrelevant. They are totally irrelevant.

David Mundy was one of the more influential players, if memory serves me corrected he was originally drafted into the Vietnam War. He's a bit of an outlier, but it's a pretty mature team and most of the younger players in the side swam when given the sink or swim treatment.

There has been a lot of waste to get to that win on Sunday. Wasted talent, wasted time, wasted money, wasted breath, wasted opportunities. There's no point going back and trying to revise that simply because we had a win, and hopefully many more wins. We have been very poor for too long and very little has gone to plan. We are not defined by a result.

We did have a few young guys last Sunday:

Brayshaw 19
Cerra 19
Darcy 20
Banfield 21
Schulz 21
Tucker 22
Ryan 23
McCarthy 23 (at least for a few more days)
Langdon 23
Pearce 23

And a few more young guys among those who didn't play:

Crowden 19
Cox 20
Dixon 20
Logue 20
Giro 20
Dumin 21
Nyhuis 22

I'd expect only upside from these guys.

There are plenty of players in the 24 - 28 age group:

Hughes, Hogan, Conca, Colyer, Hill B, Hill S, Fyfe, Lobb, Wilson, Walters, etc

Players over 28 generally go downhill, but no one seems to have explained that to David Mundy.
But clearly Ballas, Sandi and Mundy are in the twilight of their careers.

No one above 21 is considered a kid and they should be starting to hit their best. Tucker has had 5 pre-season campaigns behind him for example.

Playing the kids is not a strong suit of RL and is not behind our improvement. I wouldn't expect many kids to get a gig either considering how few we have played with such a lengthy injury list.

Also, North aren't a good comparison for age demographics, they have spent the past few years adding a bunch of mature age players like Polec, Hall, Tyson, Pittard and co. If anything, they are an example of the downside of doing what we appear to be by recruiting a bunch of mature age players to try and push up the ladder.

A better example of doing it the right way with a rebuild is the Lions atm. They had 6 players 21 or younger when they beat the reigning premiers with another 4 or 5 23 or younger. Even then, their older heads are blokes like Neale (25), Lyons (26) and Cameron (24). That's why there's so much excitement there.
