TOPIC: Season on the line for desperate Dockers

It’s hard to rate the mainstream media...a bit like rating a religion ...a mix of truth and fantasy,

Tomorrow is a test for sure as to where the playing and coaching group are at. Winning is not easy, but effort is fairly evident.

Was Collingwoods loss last night an honourable loss?

It's such an over used football reporting term, season on the line. Once you hear it you can't unhear it, like that Travelling Wilbury's song, Season on the Line. You can just hear Roy Orbison wavering over it all

"well it's alllllll right, we've only got our season on the line"

while The Bob sums it up with

"I'm just happy to be alive".

Win or lose, it's how they play that counts. A little over a week ago I saw some article from the Duffman bemoaning the lack of skills at Freo, comparing their training time to the Ooftits on that aspect of the game. It's disappointing to see him bang the gramophone on and play such a golden oldie when he could have talked about something relevant... how will Freo move the ball, why is Cam Mac named when as far as I know from over here in the Land of the Long White Cloud he hasn't played a game yet this season, how will they try to line up with a more forward heavy team...?

Relevant things, Mark. It's week frikkin one. Teams can lose for the first month and a half and still win a flag, does that count as being on the line?

Out of the 5 original Wilbury's, we're left with The Bob and that hairy bloke from ELO. Think about it Mark... be The Bob.

I think the combined intellectual efforts by all on here have certainly confirmed, in recent days, that the media is motivated by sales and the link to titillation is obvious. And, they are irresponsible and misleading regularly.
Like Bokonon said, "The people thrive on lies, so let's create more lies, to keep them happy".

Winning would be nice but I would rather see a change in the way they play.

Great song but he doesn't actually say the season is on the line.

This is probably the guts of it

The difference between victory and defeat is the difference between a perfect start and a perfect storm for Lyon and the Dockers.

If Fremantle don't put in a decent effort, if the game goes the way of the two pre-season games and they are belted, the belting won't stop at the final siren. It will continue well into the week.

I can't see how you could deny that.

If they win, it will shake off all those pre-season demons, at least for a week, and they'll be able to get some relief and focus on getting on the front foot again.

I'm not sure any of that is controversial or even insightful.

I’m not sure it all swings on this match but the first three rounds are going to go a long way to the future of this administration and/or coaching staff. If we play like a rabble then the outrage will be palpable, if we play well they buy a few more weeks.
I don’t understand the push back on Duffield for these views, I would’ve thought many would be happy to see the external pressure being brought to bare.
It’s time for results. Start playing competent football and get some meaningful output from Hogan, Bennell and McCarthy.

Drubbing- when you say “much of (the club’s) bad news writes itself ”, I’d be a bit more direct. I think the club is responsible for most of the bad news that is written about it. It’s inability to manage its own performance (from CEO and coach down) and the conceited and dismissive narrative that is delivered from Cockburn central provides more than enough material for a even a cadet journalist to write a feature article.

Our opening game of 2007 haunts me. Lots of optimism, Purple Haze game, fully fit and skilful side with most players in their prime and a bunch of nobodies from Port Adelaide visiting to start the season off. Then Port kicked 10 goals in the 3rd quarter and the season was over. Finito, done. One quarter, opening game of the season.

So please, don't try and sell me some baloney about losses meaning nothing in round 1 of the home/away. With all of our soul destroying form and daggers to the heart, from everyone from the Hackdorn to Titus O'Reilly, the game against those nobodies from North tomorrow will mean everything - as Duffers summarised. If we don't win on Sunday prepare yourself - that game against Geelong last year will predicate the start of more to come, not something symbolising what we've overcome.

A little over a month ago, Duffers' editor told him to get with what people on Dockerland are saying about Freo. A little over a week ago, he had made it to 2014. He is just reporting what was relevant then.

(He could just change the dates and put that article in every week for the next 5 weeks, and that would bring him up to March 2019)

Great song except Bob doesn't sing on the track, it was Tom Petty that was happy to be alive - Purple Haze.

What a lot of rubbish. They write these type of articles because they can with impunity. They set us up and if we lose bang. If we win story is forgotten.
Nothing on the line for a hack of a journalist with little research. To say one game is season over is such a trash statement Beggers belief that the so called newspaper would write such a headline.

Having said all that the club is a joke and has been totally irrelevant. Rosich, lyon and the Webber medical staff absolutely disgraceful. Only freo can be so incomprehensible incompetent that supporters still come week in week out.

Yeah, naah, I don't agree with that , exceed.

I think Duffield has made some valid observations.

Freo do not do well when we are behind. The ability, belief whatever it is that allows a team that is down to kick up and win games is in short supply at Freo. Once we get behind, we usually stay there and often just seem to give up. An absolute classic example is the game at Geebung last year.

Yes, it was an outlier, an extreme but a pointer to how we seem to operate.

We have the easiest start to the year that we can realistically get. The first 3 games are almost must wins for us and losing the first one would not be good for anybody. If we are to make progress on the last 3 years we need to do the best we can in winnable games. If we don't then I worry it will be a horror season.

Sure some teams can lose games early in the season and recover for finals but we haven't been one of those teams since Connolly really.

Duffield is right. The early games are very likely to be season defining but I wouldn't go too much with the dramatics from the sub-editor
