The problem, as I see it, is the apparent disconnect between Ross Lyon's self-opinionated consideration that this is as good as he's ever been as a coach, and the hard, cold reality that this 2019 team he's prepared is playing possibly the least inspiring, most unwatchable footy he's ever been responsible for.

I can't remember a year when I've been less excited or enthusiastic about the new season.

First we'd have to agree on a base line for what improvement is. For me, he doesn't have to do very much to improve. For some people we're going to have to wait for a very wet day and see if he walks on wine.

A good benchmark could be established on the day the Dockers narrowly lose at home, but in a game so enjoyable that, the following week, DL is full of praise for the way they played, regardless of the result.

In my view, this might never happen with Ross Lyon as Senior Coach.

We've had three seasons of that.

I think him saying 'this is what will happen' and then that thing happening would probably be a start. The season not being over before winter would be another step forward.
