TOPIC: Our defense

Yeah CA, I think you need to consider the almost impossibility of any group of defenders being successful against the ball being delivered almost unopposed from the middle of the ground. That ball being delivered by players who have worked on their kicking skills and being delivered to a forward setup that has been coordinated through repeated drills.

I don't care how good the players individually might be, is a losing argument when the other side has all the advantages.

Our defenders are fine. They just can't do the patently impossible

The flaw in the tactic to me, which I imagine he borrowed from another sport, is that the ground is an oval shape. There's a strategic advantage in defending in the back fifty because the ground narrows and the opposition have to bring the ball towards the centre. We seem to be trying to defend the part where it expands and the opposition can go wherever they like.

He's always lacked an understanding of getting resources where they are needed when they are needed. He should pay attention to the JIT part of the business courses he does instead of just writing down the buzz phrases.

So the defenders are too far up, the forwards are too far back, and the kids are carp. Looking promising!

Keep up. The forwards are all forward now. Everyone is forward now.

Agree with you about the use of Cerra back there Suker. Not so much about Sheed. Sealed the game and picked up plenty of disposals in the GF, plus over 40 in both JLT games. He would be a walk up starter in our midfield.
We are of the opinion that guys like him, Hutchings(tagger) and Redden are plodders and their midfield is weak, but they regularly win clearances, stoppages and deliver the ball well to their leading forwards.

And Yeti, as much as I like our backline, you could be right but we let through way too many goals regardless of our midfield. it was our strength even when we couldn't score much ourselves but not any more. i guess the days of man on man in a backline are gone.

Shane has probably nailed it. The structure or game plan is wrong.

Shane, there were plenty of times on Sunday, when we went forward and there were no targets inside 50, or even forward of the center square.

You are right about their mids Randolph. And I love an honest toiler, but Sheed is stoppable, if he is considered worthy of a tagger.

Let us not be confused by the quality of our list, it had as much potential as any list. It is about management and getting the most out of all 40 odd men. Gone is my pre season benevolence, these players need to be forged into a common-goal unit. For all the odd player comment about unity and cohesion, I just don't sense this is the case. Show me Freo. Show me that you are serious.

When everything goes wrong, we return to numbers in the back line but I think the preferred game plan has been to get the ball forward by any means possible and then defend the forward half.

He's copying his ideas from other sports.

Unfortunately, those other sports that inspire RL's tactical thinking have probably already moved on. His methods are out of date, however his thinking is analysed.

I don't know about that. I just think they don't translate that well to the oval ground and the different rules.

He copied someone's homework, name and all.

I wished he'd copy someones homework on the need for practising skills under pressure. Both games I thought we got caught out by people on over sides playing high and free when the ball was in our forward line.

It’s almost unbelievable that a person whose sole job is coaching and who is surrounded by others who also coach, wouldn’t know almost all the possible tactics that can be used in an AFL game. The next piece of the operation is to have a group who can follow instructions. As an example, Lyon cited that last week against the Pies all our forwards were leading to one spot.....not because he had instructed them to do this.

If there are nil or limited leaders in any area of the ground a side will be found wanting especially when the intensity ramps up.

Beveridge is quoted today as saying he basically can’t coach without having runners during a game, likely because he hasn’t enough leaders on the ground.

Name the true experienced leaders in our team?

Noddy, you don't need experience to be a leader, you just need confidence and ability. What you also need is the freedom to be allowed to make decisions as you see the need. That is where our leadership is hitting the rocks.

Yeah, we have good experienced players, but leadership is much more than that.
I heard that our leadership ballot is an open meeting where all have to explain their choice. This is ludicrous. Players' opinions are important, but I think popularity is not the key to leadership choices.
