TOPIC: Our defense

I believe our defense has been below par for a while. They rarely win a one on one and often spoil each other. Luke Ryan gets toweled up by every small forward and is often flying into contestants and not impacting the ball. A Pearce really tries , but given his height he rarely takes a contested mark.
Nathan Wilson struts around but constantly plays above his ability with some rediculous passing causing turn overs. They lack cohesion, chemistry and just basic footy skills. This has been the case for a while.

A Pearce really tries but given his height can't take a contested mark. What do you mean there? Isn't he pushing 200cm?

That's all misguided exceed. You lose clearances like we did and defenders look bad. The backs are fine.

I'm assuming exceed is saying that because he is that tall he should be taking more marks. He doesn't actually get a lot of the ball in general. I think our backline seems strong but is unbalanced.
My concern is that Ryan and Wilson are not really shut down type defenders. They've been told to be more attacking by Roly himself, but they can't do that and shut down a dangerous small forward. Neither can Logue or Hamling. The only player I can think of who plays in the backline that plays like this is Nyhuis and he can't get a game.

In the first quarter against the Pies (Joondalup) A. Pearce played as the intercept defender. He must've taken a half dozen marks that instantly turned play the other way. He was spectacular in the first quarter - then his role changed.

A. Pearce is a class act, he's in for a big season.

I disagree. Luke Ryan backs himself and takes heaps of marks for his size, never pulls out of a contest. When I see him near the ball drops I feel safe. As for Wilson I’ve said it before the guys that are actually making the kicks and look to open up the play look worse when they turn it over. Anyone can play it safe and chip it sideways or backwards

I never said anything about Ryan's marking or courage or Wilson's willingness to attack. What I'm trying to say is that none of Ryan, Wilson, Pearce, Hamling or Logue are the type of player you would want to play on Ryan/Rioli or any other small dangerous forwards. I don't think it's their strength but they have plenty of others.
I think our backline needs a no nonsense do the job shutdown type like Nyhuis. There may be others in our squad but i can't think of one.

Polly you know your stuff so I thought I'd better check the stats and you're right-4 kicks, 10 h/balls, 5 marks but from this weeks debacle 0 kicks, 6 h/balls, 0 marks, 2 tackles. Not sure if he spent the whole game out there though.

I am not saying they are no good - they are afl players but they are no where in the same class as other sides.
The freo defense as a collective are fumbly - a goal the eagles kicked on the weekend dribbled/bounced past both hamling and Pearce to land in an eagles hand who did not fumble and kicked a simple goal. A Pearce when he takes the game on is serviceable but let’s himself down by either running to far and getting himself into trouble and then forced to handball to a player in more trouble. His kicking is below wafl standard.
E Hughes does so many good things but then simply without pressure kicks it straight down an opposition throat. L Ryan yeah is good with the kick outs etc but he gets murdered by small forwards like Rioli and Ryan who must wonder if they have any direct opponent.
Agree hard to defend when our ruckman and midfield get obliterated , but the chemistry conordination is simply not there. No consistent slick handballs to each other in tight contest to clear the danger area , or consistent beating their man to cause a turnover. Hamling nearly marks many , but they still don’t stick when it counts.
It could be confidence or simply coaching structures or overall strength in their bodies. Mcgovern, Barass,Hurn , Elliot yeoh are physical beast. Even Sheppard for his height is strong. Other than logue ours are more skinny . Look at poor duman 3rd year on our list still a skinny kid. Good structures and coaching would help but physical strength is also important.

JLT 2 isn’t a good game to critique our backline when we were getting belted in the clearances. Like trying to stop a Tsunami with a bucket and spade.

Our defence is currently the strongest part of our team. Some may say that’s indicative of where we are at but I’ll wait until a few games into the real season and perhaps until we can put most of our best on the ground before making a proper judgement.

We’ve still a relatively young team, plenty of new players and injuries to key players, so it’ll take time before things settle down.

Seems to me the problem with the defence is that they're trying to defend from the half forward line. The old expression to a man with a hammer, every problem is a nail sums it up.

Rather than defending in the back half and then running the ball into an empty forward line, Ross's more attacking game plan seems to involve getting the ball forward and then defending that half of the ground. So if the ball slips out of Fremantle forward line it's barely defended. All the resources were allocated to keeping the ball forward.

Ross talks about defending entries rather than converting entries.

So the break down in defence isn't the back line, the back line isn't set up properly for that. The break down in defence is when it leaves the forward line. After that it's a mad scramble to regroup.

That seems to be a reasonable analysis. I haven’t been to any JLT games and trying to work out what’s happening on a Freo game on the TV is like trying to make comment on a cut up Picasso.

I think the quality of each back line player is good and better and great potential to build on for us. Very unlucky with injuries early on and if that gets better ie fewer injuries we should do alright.

I still think with the new rules, if you aren’t competitive at the centre clearances then it’ll be like tackling the Col Du Tourmalet with a flat back tyre.....pushing it uphill.

Agree that on paper our backline looks to be strong, but the amount of goals scored against what we think is our strength is worrying. So there is definitely something wrong with the set up.
Who is our intercept marker? Who is the general in charge down there now McPharlin and Johnson are gone? Who are the ball carriers looking for targets up the ground? Or are they told to just bomb it long?

A good backline always prides themselves as being a team within a team but at the moment our supposed strength isn't looking that way.

When an honest toiler (at best) like Sheed gets 40 touches, your midfield has been thrashed. And when the ball is moved out of our forward half with relative ease, their short passes hitting the mark always...considering all this, why are we even scrutinising our defence?
And, playing Cerra back there, even Conca...to me is just a confused mind at work. Only one mind I say, because it really is a dictatorship.
