No good blaming Harvey. Harvey played him as a wingman.

Rolt tried to turn him into an inside mid and succeeded in turning him into a regular injury

Sorry, I thought you meant back in the day. I know they used Hill in the centre square a few times the last couple of years (we do lack some zip in there), but I wouldn’t have described him as an inside mid. If anything I thought he was playing halfback. I thought always has quad injuries, and the issue was when he kicked the ball. I’m not sure you can peg his current injuries to an occasional change in role.

Yeti speaking of Liverpool James Milner can play anywhere. When there’s an injury he comes straight in and plays on a wing, midfield, left back or right back... Salah was a winger for Roma but Klopp last season turned him into one of the best strikers in Europe. Scored the most goals in a premier league season. I agree not everyone should be moved from their best position but it’s good to have some flexibility.

As a former soccer coach,I loved a forward who could tackle and a centre back who could go forward(especially at corners).Players who play in defence as juniors often go forward later on.Crowley was a very complete player who could mark, tackle and score goals. He was a great tagger as he could hurt the opposition when we had possession.Being predictable is death in football,so having options and creating avenues to goal is going to give any side an advantage. With the game being won in the midfield, rotation of players helps win the battle.Cox put himself in the frame to play forward.I would like to see Banfield as a half forward as he can tackle,Mark, win his own ball and kick goals.

Afl is so unique I don’t think you can really compare it against another sport. As for Hill he should be played on a wing. There was nothing better then watching Hill charge through the middle of subi having a bounce and it was either a goal from 50 or hitting someone on the chest

R.Lyon,

agree on Milner but lets be honest, he like Pav is a bit of a unique case.
(I'll amend that a little by saying he doesn't hold down a regular place in the starting side because the specialists in those positions are better. Yes he is a great fill in but not as good as those he replaces)

Agree on Salah as well but striker is his position. Sure he can play on a wing but he is so much less effective than he is up forward where he has to be defended all day. You couldn't say that when he didn't play up forward.

I've never said that we shouldn't have flexibility. I have said that continually playing guys out of position is madness. Especially when the justification seems to be forcing square pegs into round holes to fit a preconceived game structure instead of adjusting that approach to fit the player's strengths.

Some players can be used effectively in different but in my view most players lose something when they are moved.

Where we need flexibility shown is in the coaching box. Maybe try to adjust things to get the best of our playing group instead of adjusting the playing group to fit the only plan we have ever tried. As has been said, predictability is death in football and we are nothing if not predictable (except for our kicking. That is often unpredictable)

The demand from the coaches to recruit players who 'can play anywhere' is a call for those players to paper over the cracks off the field.

I agree some players don’t get settled and you never seem to see the best of them.
I think you can see changes in our game from the last two seasons. It’ll be interesting to see how attacking we are this year with some tall targets. Anyway for me Cox should play forward he’s got great hands, reads the ball well and is such a natural footballer. He’s set shot looks as if it’s improving also. Blakely midfield, know how to find the footy and plays hard. He was great off half back last year though. Walters split between midfield and forward he’s so creative through the middle and can still kicks a couple goals a game. Cerra looks as if he’s put some size on but maybe not fit enough to play a full game in the middle just yet but will be a midfielder. Brayshaw midfielder, smart, hardworking and runs both ways. Banfield I really don’t know. I just don’t see him as a natural small forward or mid size forward I think he’d be better through the midfield also. Lobb I wouldn’t want to see him just used as a forward I think he’ll go missing. He has to have spells in the ruck

Yeah maybe. I wouldn't disagree with much of that.

Lobb might be the sticking point though. Apparently he signed with us because he wants to be a forward and not used in the ruck. So what did we promise him?

I reckon he'll go missing in games as well and as a pure forward, he's behind Hogan and I'm not sure I'd put him in front of Tabs or Cox.

Still, early days, wait and see how he pans out

Morgan, I got nothing against NBA refs, most of them are anonymous as far as wanting to be a central part of the action goes. You cherry-picked Dramon Green as a player who could play every position on the court and who was successful as a centre, when his physique said he should not be. I just pointed out why he managed to be successful, that's all. In my opinion, very few NBA players get a favoured run from the refs (unlike with AFL), Green is the only one that comes to mind over the last few decades.

Fire? Luxury - in 2001 what the few of us on those wind swept benches would have given for some warmth!

I thought this post was going to be about where we are going to put all the blokes who are all usually in our back 50. I'm still none the wiser, and seeing the fish and chip wrapper blowing around by the sculptures today, it seems the Loss the Ross is not sure either
