This disappoints me.

www.fremantlefc.com.au/news/2019-03-06/b...pregame-gaff-gesture

Fremantle young gun Andrew Brayshaw plans to seek out West Coast midfielder Andrew Gaff to shake hands if they both start on the ground in Sunday's JLT Community Series clash.

I know people will view it as a sign of sportsmanship or a gesture of goodwill but to me it feels like a return to the years of bowing to our masters. The notion that the Eagles are our big brothers that was hard fought against for many years, literally with blood, and now we've got a bloke who was punched in the face, almost apologising that he made Gaff miss the grand final with his inconvenient broke jaw.

I know he's just saying he'd shake his hand if he saw him, but the whole way the club has dealt with this smacks of behaving like they don't want to upset the Eagles. It's bad enough when it comes from the Channel 7 types but do we need to follow their lead and play down the assault of a young kid at every opportunity.

It's bad enough that we've lost the respect of everyone else but we could at least have some respect for ourselves.

When I read this yesterday, I also got pretty angry.

Wry is it up to us to try and smooth things over when the thug who punched Brayshaw is only concerned about not being booed. Follow that up with the comment about self respect and it made me think 'what self respect'?

When Nisbett finally commented on thug boys actions, it was notable for two things. He lied about a golf game that never occurred and he criticized the club for making inflammatory comments. We said nothing in response.

We get to play the theatrical villain and lose staged football games that are held to celebrate a bloke dying from an overdose instead of telling them to shove it.

We acted faux tough over the Glendinning medal then folded insured of telling them where to stick it.

Channel eagle consistently talks down Freo and acts as a propaganda arm of the eagles and we continue to go along with that without comment.

If you really want to talk about self respect, we might need to find some first

I think the people going to the game in Mandurah should set a new world resord for booing every time gaffy goes near the ball.

I was proud of the way the club handled Gaff’s act of thuggery in the immediate aftermath. In contrast, the Eagles were a disgrace, to the extent The West even called them out. The West!

It seems that Brayshaw is just a very forgiving person. I think a huge part of why we took him at #2 was because of his character and one manifestation of that is that he’s willing to forgive Gaff. Part of that willingness probably flows from the fact his brother plays for that lot, and he doesn’t want to make life harder for him.

I admire it, and he’s clearly a better person than most. When a 19 year old is willing to look beyond his own busted teeth, I’m not sure what the club is supposed to do but fall in line behind him in taking the moral high ground.

But each player has their own moral code, and if I was playing and Gaff was on the field, I might not be so forgiving. I’d be a bit disappointed if our players missed opportunities to let him know his actions haven’t been forgiven by everyone.

It's not the act of shaking his hands. Essentially all he said was that he would shake his hand if he was playing on him, as he does with everyone he plays on. It's the tone of everything surrounding it.

They wheeled him out at the press conference for this very reason. The tone of everything around this is that we're sorry Gaff had

The Eagles try this on with everything. Adam Selwood always comes to mind, the way he was painted as a quality (white) person and Headland was a no good (black) thug. As soon as the verdict came out, Selwood was viewed differently by the world and they stopped pretending he was anything but a filthy tagger.

The Eagles are trying to protect Gaff's reputation. He is a thug with a temper problem who beats up children. That's what the Eagles do. Why do we need to help them. At the very least, don't runs stories that go to great lengths to highlight all the times Brayshaw has apologised for being punched.

In 2019, if Des Headland punched Adam Selwood for telling him he had sex with his daughter, we'd apologise, send Selwood a gift basket and send Headland to Peel Thunder for 9 weeks.

I was actually going to bring up a topic today calling on dockerland to get behind the booing of that dirty thug after Freo's media bombardment regarding forgetting about it and looking after the bloke who assaulted one of our kids.

This is football, it's tough, hard and physical. It's a contact sport. However it's not a place to go belting people and getting away without a worry in the world. Gaff missed a couple of games of the sport he's paid to play, that's nothing. He was applauded by his fans and no doubt received many words of encouragement from fans and supporters in WA over his horrible act, 'Don't let it bring you down Gaffy, it was just a little mistake. You're alright, we know you're a good bloke. That Brayshaw shouldn't have been harassing you, you couldn't help it. Boys will be boys. It's a rush of blood and sometimes these things happen. Forget about it, worry about tomorrow.'

That makes my blood boil and every time I think back to that moment or see the vision, it boils just as hot as on the day. My passion and anger hasn't subsided and I hope a few Freo boys feel the same way, intending on driving tackles right through him and making sure he has one eye in the back of his head all day.

I also hope Freo fans don't ever forget that moment or let it slide, he deserves the abuse. All those times racist OOFTIT crowds boo'd Goodes or any number of players due to completely ridiculous reasoning let alone the boos at almost every umpiring decision ever made, they have no right to question our booing of that scumbag.

Don't buy this media coverage, he needs to know how we felt when he broke a kids jaw unprovoked and didn't get jail time.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

We can expect the slime supporters to boo Brayshaw - and then tell us its because they don't like the way he plays football. Don't give them an inch.

At a player level, Brayshaw was probably the biggest Freo story coming out of JLT1. Being one of the best on ground in his first game back was a tremendous effort, and very encouraging for his recovery. He’s also going to be on the field with Gaff this week. So, all told, they were always going to roll him out for a media appearance this week.

Freo’s website ran two stories from that media appearance: one about his view on the new rules, and one about his ambition to crack a permanent midfield role. There was a third article, written and posted by AFL.com.au that Freo re-posed on its site. This is the article you seem to have a problem with. Of course AFL.com.au is going to have a piece on Gaff, because they’ll more than double the views.

Brayshaw is an admirable young man, and having such a wonderful young ambassador for the club in front of the cameras is a good thing for Freo. Not putting him out there would have looked like he was hiding. He said if he saw Gaff he’d shake his hand, or get in touch afterwards. It was written and published by AFL.com.au. That you can turn that into ‘bowing to our masters’ or ‘almost apologising’ or ‘playing down the assault’ or ‘lacking self-respect’ I think says a bit more about your view of the club than Freo's handling of the situation.

I would love for this to continue to be a flashpoint between the clubs. I would love for Lyon to come out and publicly say that Gaff should be very nervous about what’s coming to him. I would love for every Freo player to look to settle the score whenever they get a chance. I would love for the fans to boo every time Gaff gets the ball for the rest of his career.

It sounds like Andrew just wants to move on from what I’m guessing is one of the most traumatic days of his life. I think part of moving past that, for him, is forgiveness. If that’s what he wants, then I reckon the club should back him on that. That Freo fans have a chip on their our shoulders because the Eagles are a bunch of bastards comes a distant second to supporting Andrew.

But as I said earlier, everyone has their own code, and I’ll be boing Gaff for as long as he’s playing. I hope the players play their part (but don't get suspended), and I hope when Melbourne plays West Coast Angus gets to spend some quality time playing on Gaff.

I agree Gaff is a thug, the Eagles have history of this stuff, Gaff should be booed every time he goes near the ball, etc.

BUT Brayshaw wants to play his best footy and the team wants to play their best footy. I also want to see their best footy. And they won't do that if they are concentrating on getting revenge against the thug Gaff.

They don't have to get revenge but, likewise, the coach of Fremantle doesn't have to make their reconciliation a big deal at his press conference. Which, if you go back to the start of the week, is where the topic got legs again.

Traditionally someone might raise it, from the other side of the microphone, and the coach would play it down saying - that's all behind us and we'll just be concentrating on the football. Not change the subject from the football to how Brayshaw will be looking forward to an opportunity to shake his assailants hand. It's not how normal football clubs react.

Gaff, Montanga, Hird...it's almost as if Ross Lyon has something on his mind.

Funny, given the lead up to this game, I don’t see any recent articles or interviews with Gaff in which he says he’s sorry again and will seek out Andy B to shake his hand, not as a sign of sportsmanship but of continuing remorse. And I keep seeing these comments along the line of "Gaff missed out on a premiership, he's been punished enough." Bollocks.

Stuff ‘em. I don’t like Gaff and plan to boo him every opportunity I get to remind him that he’s a thug. Regardless of what spin the press is trying to promote…

Carry big signs that read

Gaff, I'll look away so you can punch me

Or

Gaff, punch me and we'll play golf

Or just settle for

Boo you thug

Whatever you do, boo thug boy and let channel eagle know that nothing has been forgotten and he can carry that the rest of his career

I'm taking the Richmond line on this. The club could have come out and said something along the lines of "Maybe we forgive Gaff for what he has done, but don't for a minute think we have forgotten it." The opportunity to inflict some heavy but legal retribution will come, don't go looking for it, but make sure any opportunity that presents is taken advantage of. This week, next derby and every derby til the end of that slimy lowdown thug's career.
