TOPIC: JLT1: What I learned

The major take away from the game yesterday was our lack of structure going forward. There's still no plan or clear way forward other than bombing it long, even now the lack of targets excuse is gone. So many times we'd have the ball under little to no pressure through the middle, have time to look around and assess our option, then bomb it to a big pack for no apparent reason. It was dumb and only became worse as the game went on. A 60 vs 46 inside 50 count should never result in a 5 goal loss.

The starting point was a good showing from Lobb against a clearly underdone Grundy. He split the contest and provided plenty of run around the ground which was promising. I'd rule Jones out of ever being an AFL standard ruckman, doesn't contribute around the ground and was monstered by Grundy.

Brayshaw stepped up big time in the middle to lead the clearance domination for Freo. I'm hoping for big things from him in Neale's absence. The big surprise though was Darcy Tucker and his efforts to win the footy. He laid 13 tackles and worked as hard as anyone on the ground. He won the footy and disposed of it carefully.

Cerra looked big and strong but wasn't played through the middle where I think he should be. He roamed half back when on the ground and looked a class above without getting a tonne of the footy. I'd like to see him on a wing by Rd 1.

Our defense will certainly benefit from the new kick in rules with both Wilson and Ryan looking dangerous from their kick outs. I much prefer them loping out of the square and delivering +60m to the wing than the previous system of chipping to a pocket then crossing back and forth across goal with no target to kick to.

I didn't like the way we flooded back though, not picking up opponents or attacking the man with the footy. At one point there was a single pie running through half forward to about 25m from goal with 6 freo defenders running towards goal in front of him against one other pie in the goal square. Instead of a couple of players going to meet the Pie with the ball, they all sprinted towards goal allowing him to easily wander in and slot it from 25m without pressure. I'm not sure if all 6 of those players are at fault or there's a clear instruction from the coaches there but it was plain dumb.

Up forward Cox was easily the standout and looked to provide a good marking target as well as good skills when the ball was brought to ground. He is just a natural footballer and while a lot of people are on the Tabs bandwagon, I've firmly been on Cox as the man to join Hogan and Lobb up forward. There are knocks to his speed and kicking but I reckon he's quicker than Tabs as well as gaining an edge in his ability to read the play/situation and begin to move first. His shots at goal are also looking far more fluid and relaxed as he spends more time in the forward 50m. Based on yesterday, he has a key post sewn up and at just 20 years old, a lot of improvement left in him. I'm excited.

On the other side of the spectrum, I'm putting a line through Matera as an AFL player. He has everything to play for, his career is clearly on the line but he struggles to get near the footy or know what to do with it. Bailey Banfield who seems to have been moved to the cursed half forward position that has seen Crowley, Barlow and DeBoer disintegrate looked far more dangerous, even as an aerial threat. I'd love to see Schultz get a gig next week up forward to push for Rd 1 based on what I've seen and heard of him.

All in all it wasn't what I wanted to see from the side structurally but there were some individual positives to be taken from the game. Hopefully there will be improvements in team structure next week but I hold little hope if we didn't implement anything yesterday.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Morgan, would it be too old fashioned to suggest that Mundy plays in the centre. IN the centre square, to use his most valuable assets, his marking under pressure to provide and outlet for when all the rest of our mids are back in the back pocket, and to save Hoges & Lobb having to do repeated 100 meter sprints. To intercept mark when the opposition turn it over in our 50, and to provide the on ground direction for our young players. Don't worry about going back or forward, maybe sneak to the forward 50 to seagull a mark or 2 and goals when the opposition forget he is there. Don't put undue pressure on him to chase, and let him play the season like that?

Yeah, I tend to agree RM. I would probably have him play 50-to-50, and hopefully that is something they are thinking about. But it's not just the running that wears players out, it's the bangs and bumps, and recovery just isn't the same at 34. If he's playing centre square and on ball for most of the game, he's going to get niggles and worn out even if you cut his running down 20%.

As for our forward movement, for a long time we’ve struggled to transition from the backline to the forwards. I thought we really improved our ball movement in the back half last year (coinciding with better ball users being there), and my hope this year was that Hogan and CamMac could be the players to help link into the forward line. Without those types of guys pushing out to provide a target 70m from goal, it’s going to be hard graft bombing it into blokes like Tabs, Cox and Lobb from the middle of the ground, in part because I’m not sure defenders need to be too worried about those guys beating their man on a lead.

I’m hoping Hogan is able to play a whole game for JLT2, and I really hope CamMac gets a crack. It’s weird I know, but I think he could be our X-factor. I also think we've struggled to replace S Hill. He's one of the few midfielders who can hit a target over 40m.

Brennan Cox is a rare talent. Slow as a wet week but his hands in the marking contest and ability to create space when he has the football is very good. He looks dangerous up forward.

I just want to get on a step ladder and climb half way up it and whack some sense into Taberner.Just watching him continuously get caught under the ball when we were kicking into the breeze. Son, change what you are doing when its not working.

Morgan, if he is making the play, and not having to run himself into the ground, he will last the season out. See if you can get a replay of the NRL GF when Cronk played with a busted shoulder blade, the only reason he was out there was to provide direction and experience for the young players around him. His team won.

...that (despite his promising red hot start to 2018) Taberner still drops far more marks than he ever takes. On a lighter note I suggest a bucket of long AND high hit cricket balls per training session to help him develop his positioning and what it means to keep your eye on the ball (Mzungu could help him out there). A few black eyes and broken fingers might sort it out.

...that we are still far too slow in the midfield, Ballantyne and Matera are depth players at best. Walters and perhaps Schulz should play as the small forwards.

... Brennan Cox has the smarts, leave him up forward.

You always look slow when you are chasing. Walters kicks far more goals playing as a midfielder than as a forward, leave him up the ground. Oh, he adds pace to our slow midfield as well.

Walters has quick hands, quick thinker under pressure, quick change of direction, but lacks flat out running speed. I reckon he should get free licence to run through the midfield as he sees fit, but primarily as a forward.

I didn't like the lack of interaction between the players who sat out the game.
I have do have a problem with Fyfe and seems like a group of players do as well as they moved away to other seats a couple of minutes after he sat down in the group.
What I learned yesterday is Fyfe has a water bottle only for the purpose to dab water on his hair every couple of minutes and runs fingers thru to give the Fabio effect.
What happened on the ground in these games is irrelevant, but good to see a any game of footy at this time.
Another thing I learned is Ross Lyons summer shorts makes him look like Cartman of South Park

I glanced back over my shoulder as Ross was walking up the open stairway to the coaching box after 3/4 time!
it reminded of the times when you were a kid and you`d get traumatised by your Dad`s shorts when he sat down on the sand at the beach.
