I don't understand this. They created a league from nothing, it's fully subsidised by the established men's league, it's on free to air television and it's proving to be very successful. You see football grounds packed with girls cheering on their new heroed.

But then you get a lot of this talk, as if anyone cares if something is on channel 7 or channel 73. It's not 1975, people don't sit down in front of the tv, put it on their favourite channel and watch whatever is on.

AFLW continues to fight for its fair share of the limelight, particularly when it comes to broadcast and media coverage, despite its undeniable grassroots momentum.

There is no grass roots momentum. The AFL built that momentum. They should be applauded for pouring money into women's football, not criticised because for not pouring in enough. The AFLW doesn't have to survive on it's ratings or it's attendances because it's being run sustainably for the long term.

Well some people are determined to feel aggrieved at something.

If nothing is done to offend them, they'll be offended by the lack of attention.

The AFLW is growing. The women's game is growing. Its being funded well enough to grow into a self sustaining entity in time and the quality of the football is getting better all the time.

7Mate is also a high definition channel, so all good there.

So yeah, theres a lot to get offended by....somewhere...

Pffft I thought this was going to be a gripe about the stupid conference system that is in play and how being 3 on the ladder means you can miss out playing in a final.

Does that mean everything on 7-3 the HD channel is not prime time? So that explains a lot - not.

Im a bit surprised that i can still watch my team on the tv. At the start of the year they had a different broadcast schedule and i griped at only getting 3 games out of 8. But they've had all four games on. Good on them.

In my view the AFLW is better this year, by and large. But what I like most about it is that it has presented a visible goal for all those little sisters that I've seen out on the ground whacking around their Burleys during the main break in the WAFL. That isn't just good, that's bloody marvellous.

While I agree the viewing of AFLW and which channel it's on means little in terms of how successful the game is, I think the article makes very good points about the competition from AFLX which is an unnecessary distraction to the women's league. I still don't understand the point of AFLX and it's impact on the women's league could only be negative.

Like Polly, I've had a lot of mates pick up the footy for the first time and join women's teams around Perth in the past few weeks. At least half a dozen are learning the game from the other side of the fence for the first time and joining local teams which is just fantastic. AFLW has had a huge impact so far and is a raging success.

You can see with the already large improvement in quality since the first season. The younger players coming through are infinitely better skilled as they have more defined pathways to the big leagues and greater opportunity to practice and learn. The growth of the game has been amazing and I hope continues to be supported and thrust further into the limelight.

The premise behind this article is that AFL-X is a waste of time and money. Although I agree wholeheartedly with that sentiment, the self-exulted ones in AFL House do not.

I agree that AFLW could have been promoted more and better, and given a longer season. I would have much preferred to have watched a couple of AFLW games last Friday than the AFL-X yawn-a-thon.

There is no doubt that AFLW is booming and the more it is promoted and broadcast on TV, the faster it will grow. Could the AFL have done more this year for AFLW? Sure - of course they could have. But they didn't want to. They want the AFL-X to be a huge and immediate success.

Watching Offsiders on the weekend I thought the problem they had with the AFLX was that, as journalists they take sport far too seriously, often to the point of tedium and they couldn't do that with the AFLX.

The AFLX is in no way a serious thing. It was nonsense by design and all their attempts to be critical of it were silly because it is silly. Alex Rance riding in on a skateboard was an hilarious take off of the Americans, not an attempt to be like them. They couldn't get that because they think sport is too important for that sort of carry on. Brad Hill couldn't stop giggling.

So this seems to be their best effort to try and throw weight behind the argument, complain about it distracting from the AFLW. It didn't.

If anything, it would have brought people's attention back to the footy season and more will tune in next week to watch the women.

It's missing the point that the AFL made the AFLW, under no pressure to do so and with not much of a base to build from. They have a vested interest in it succeeding. They want girls playing football.

The AFL should be applauded for the way it has championed the AFLW. Like most administrative bodies it will get its fair share of things wrong, but I think they have got a lot right. As Polly says, it’s great there are now more visible pathways and role models for girls, but I look forward to taking my son when he is a bit older to give him a different perspective on how tough women are than he’s probably subtly subjected to in a million different ways in his young life.

I also love how the AFLW has embraced the community aspect of footy. The AFL is a ‘great product’, but it’s so generic and professional these days that to me it sometimes feels a step removed from real life. That’s why I love getting down to WAFL games, but I can see how AFLW is a very good avenue for those who want something a little more local.

I do tend to agree the AFLX by dint of its placement right in the middle of the AFLW seems a little jarring. Personally, if the AFLX is a just a fun exercise, I’d prefer to see them go one step further and have a mixed competition Hopman Cup style, either with zones on the field, or have the squads name both men and women, and the women play in the first half and the men in the second (or vice versa) on the same team with a cumulative score. I think it would add to the event, and doubles as cross promotion for the AFLW.

I'm not sure the AFLX being something silly poking fun at the US proves it wasn't distracting to the AFLW. I would have loved to sit down and watch the Freo girls last Friday night play a tough game against strong opposition in the prime time slot. Any of the women's games would have been good to watch after a long working week.

Instead it was some rubbish hybrid no one cared about that was promoted endlessly in competition with AFLW. All those adverts and media time spent on AFLX should have been focused on the girls and the way their competition is shaping up this season. There were some big games on the weekend gone and there was little seen on tv promoting that. There should have been.

The AFL has done a great job getting the women's game started and opening up pathways for women but they have made a mistake here.

I'm sure you would but Friday nights aren't really a feature of the women's game at this point. It's tough to get suitable grounds with lights, it doesn't really fit the target audience and it's not fully professional so the travel can be a burden.

So it's a bit of a fallacy that AFLX was played in place of the AFLW.

I don't dispute anything you have said AFLW on Friday nights Shane but from a purely personal point of view, I would much rather have watched the girls playing rather than that stupid AFLX.

It's a crap idea, a crap format, a crap structure and did I mention that it was crap.

The girl's games have so far been much more interesting and entertaining. Maybe they should look at Friday nights. They'll have the audience numbers eventually I'm sure but I'm not so sure that AFLX would ever be repeated

They are certainly constraints for a women's match in the same time slot but two Melbourne sides (Kangas and Demons played a great game on the Sunday) eliminates travel and I'm sure they can light up a suburban ground pretty easily or play it in a littloe larger stadium around Melbourne.

There are a number of solutions to play a Friday night blockbuster in the AFLW and it seemed like a good time to do it, the week before the JLT starts and the men begin to dominate the headlines and media. AFLX really seems like a missed opportunity and a bit of a kick to the women's comp.

I get you don't like the AFLX but I just don't see how one is related to the other.

The AFLX will probably be back once or twice and disappear. Lots of people will have a mild bit of fun but no one will ever really understand why any of it happened.

A big show for one night in the women's league does nothing for it. It's a generational project. It needs to be consistent and sustainable and grown over a long time.

I'm not worried about the AFLW disappearing, I'd like it more ingrained in the average AFL fan. A big part of that is it's promotion in the early stages and the continuing development of the competition as it's own force.

With the complete media focus on AFLX it took away from the AFLW competition. Do I think it will stop AFLW becoming more of a success? No. Does it slow it's rise? I believe so.
