Doctors in the house... can you tell us what surgery on a bursa is supposed to do? especially in the space of time to heal and be playing in a few weeks?

This is a genuine question with no facetiousness (for a change!).

I know they can be removed and grow back but I'd have thought this would take a while.

According to the reports, its an operation on a swollen bursa in his elbow. A bursa is a kind of fluid filled cushion between joints

Tragic could tell you a lot more (and I hope he doesn't savage me too badly for my explanation) but I've had two removed from my shoulders because of swelling and apparently they grow back after a period of time (around 6 weeks)

Fyfe may only have his drained and treated with antibiotics to clear up the inflammation.

Either way, it is likely realistic he'll be good to go for round 1

Yeti, are they the things that Dr's used to whack with a phone book? I guess it is too hard to find a phone book these days to do the job, whacking it with a google would probably not have the same effect. (Although Belmont Police Station might still have a stash of the old style 6 lb phone books)

I have no inside knowledge but I am assuming he is undergoing an olecranon bursectomy. Treatment of Olecranon Bursitis
There is a newer surgical technique where the bursectomy is done endoscopically. That technique is said to have lower complication rate in experienced hands. I don't think that a torn calf muscle is a known complication of an olecranon bursectomy The major risks are recurrent symptoms if the operation site is not adequately rested post operatively and of wound infection.

Ganglion is what you are thinking of, Raglan. I reckon smashing one with an iPhone AFL X would do the trick.

I seriously don't like the thought of slicing open flesh, probing deep into a joint, scraping/slicing/sucking/plasma cutting/laser incinerating/or any-other-removing of something inflamed and much larger than it should be then being able to recover in time to play footy in a couple of weeks. Then last for a season, unhindered.

The bursa is external to the joint. There is no need to enter the elbow joint when removing an olecranon bursa.

Just so long as he keeps running with the elbow protection sleeve I don't mind what the procedure is.
